Junkers Ju 287 V1

Wikipedia description until further notice.

The Junkers Ju 287 was a Nazi Germany aerodynamic testbed built to develop the technology required for a multi-engine jet bomber. It was powered by four Junkers Jumo 004 engines, featured a revolutionary forward-swept wing, and apart from said wing was assembled largely from components scavenged from other aircraft.

The first prototype was intended to evaluate the concept, and was cobbled together from the fuselage of an He 177 A-5, the tail of a Ju 388, main undercarriage from a Ju 352, and nosewheels taken from crashed B-24 Liberators.

Two of the Jumo 004 engines were hung under the wings, with the other two mounted in nacelles added to the sides of the forward fuselage.Flight tests began on 16 August 1944 (pilot: Siegfried Holzbaur[1]), with the aircraft displaying extremely good handling characteristics, as well as revealing some of the problems of the forward-swept wing under some flight conditions. The most notable of these drawbacks was 'wing warping', or excessive in-flight flexing of the main-spar and wing assembly. Tests suggested that the warping problem would be eliminated by concentrating greater engine mass under the wings. This technical improvement would be incorporated in the subsequent prototypes. The 287 was intended to be powered by four Heinkel-Hirth HeS 011 engines, but because of the development problems experienced with that motor, the BMW 003 was selected in its place. The second and third prototypes, V2 and V3, were to have employed six of these engines, in a triple cluster under each wing. Both were to feature the all-new fuselage and tail design intended for the production bomber, the Ju 287A-1. V3 was to have served as the pre-production template, carrying defensive armament, a pressurised cockpit and full operational equipment.

Why are we getting this?

because it really feels counterproductive on all account with the notable exception of bombload..

Anyone reliable info then this out there? Gaijin, share the specs?

A jet bomber with fixed landing gear... Oh boy.

Best part, it'll be tier V because it's a jet, and it'll never ever meet those tier 3s that are still faster than it...

Only the first prototype had fixed landing gear.

"The production version was to have two 13-mm MG131 machine guns in a remote-controlled tail turret, the bomb load of 4000kg (8800lbs) was to be carried. After successful flight test in August 1944, the Ju 287 demonstrated excellent characteristics, and three prototypes were built with more powerful engines, and improved features including pressurized cockpit (for a crew of 3), retractable landing gear and take off assistance rockets" from a book Aircraft of the Luftwaffe, 1935-1945 by Jean-Denis G.G. Lepage

Russians captured later prototipes and further developed them

"The Ju287V1 was destroyed during the occupation phase of the Soviet forces in April 1945. But at Dessau the Soviets continued the construction of the V2 and V3, which were flown in summer 1945. Baade continued the developement of the Ju287 under Soviet leadership. In Dessau the EF131 was designed, which was ready for its first flight in August 1946. But before the first flight was performed, the Soviets transfered all developement and test work to Podberesje in Russia in September 1946. The first flight was performed by the German testpilot Paul Jugle on 23.05.1947 at Stakhanovo airfield in Russia. In June 1948 the Soviets advised the German team to stop further developement of the EF131. A second prototype was already under construction in Russia, but was later scrapped and used for the construction of the EF140."

Hidden & Dangerous:  Devil's Bridge

In the very first mission you steal that plane ;)s

Or at least something that looks almost exactly like that, it's been awhile, pretty sure that's it though

Interesting plane definetly, looking forward to it (as well as cockpit...oh wait).

Don't miss this one here, contains a ton of information about the whole prokect: http://de.scribd.com/doc/4674179/Monogram-Close-Up-01

I think this was just the speed of the V-1 prototype; the V-2 was supposed to be capable of 800 kph, and the EF 131 (which was the continuation of Ju 287 development, under Soviet control) managed either 860 or 904 kph.

Funny how similar the Soviet development is to early cold war aircraft made by the USSR.

i doubt the V1 will be the one coming to game, it couldn't even carry bombs as it was just a proof of concept and it has a paltry top speed.

i recon the V2 might, but my money is on the V3 as it has flown more than once and has genuine bomb provisions and weapons.

I think (I hope, at least) they're going to add the V3(A-0/A-1) because it's actually combat capable.

The v1 looked so amazing, but it was realy crappy too; (non-retlactable landing gear, NO confirmed armament, derpy bombs hanging from the fuselage, and the speed- O MY GOD.)

The v3 is better in every way. two 13mms, retractable gear, more engines, and it was tested for more time.

We should get the V3 but knowing Gaijin...I won't be surprised to see the V1 instead.

The V1 never had any bombs...it was just a testbed for the wings

Sorry! I' m new here, and I might not know everything. I didn' t found any confirmed info about the bombs placement. Additionally, the V3 is very often mistaken with the V2. Both pictures and data.

  • 2 weeks later...

I find the lack of hype for this aircraft disturbing. I demand a raise of hype.

On topic:

I imagine this aircraft would compete quite well with the B-57 And Canberra. (not the Cannonberra)

Not in top speed, but it does have a better bombload and it has defensive armament.

Assuming we get the V-3, which would seem like the only logical choice to me.

I've expected much more hype too. Strange... Anyway I also hope for the V3 variant.
