Arcade - Fighter Tutorial Videos

I've given RB a shot on several occasions, but each time I've found the mode to be 90% frustration and 10% enjoyment. Frustration at the FOTM plane abuse, at whole teams that dive to the deck at the merge (if they bother climbing at all), making it a complete waste of time if you've climbed & positioned as suddenly all planes are furballing at zero altitude & will be shot down before you get within 5km of them, frustration at the one-sided nature of most matches I've been in where you're either outmatched & kerb stomped, or your team does the stomping - very few battles are anything like an even & hard-fought contest, frustration at the controls - far more reliant on the mouse when using mouse aim as keyboard controls are far too clunky, but stick is not a great alternative as planes stall very easily in maneuvers which the mouse can perform with no hint of a stall, frustration at the comparative lack of earnings & RP compared to Arcade, and last but not least frustration at the griefing & team killing which occurs far more often than in Arcade.

Maybe I need to give it another shot, I don't know. Its either that or find another game to play.

Play RB air from BR 3.7 onward, do not play on US server (no offense to US people but, spamming bombers/attackers in air superiority match, really?). RB air can be fun on lower tiers, but expect furballs.... it isn't that much different in AB now is it?

I usually play US on EU server, and love the challenge. Yes most matches my team gets stomped because 80% thinks they can outclimb Japan who has an airstart, but what the hell.

One needs to use more mouse in RB, but still need to use full deflection maneuvers for doing reversals with keyboard input. But, you need to adjust your play style... in AB you can stall out enemies easily, in RB it's more difficult to do such a thing because he's either too low on energy to pull his nose up, or high enough to not stall. In AB you can put your nose fully vertical even when close to stall speed... RB turns more in a game of energy fighting. There are more weaknesses to planes in RB air, f.e. in your video on RB you can see yourself pulling lead on the ai plane while your plane in under a >90 degree angle... this is very hard, if not impossible to get a good shot off. How to approach your enemy and at which energy state becomes crucial for success... too high and he can cause a too easy overshoot and deny you any possibility to shoot, too low and he can switch position and stick on your 6 long enough to give you a bad day.

I got teamkilled only once in 500 battles and that was by "accident", I don't think it's that much of an issue.

I would say, play a few 100 games in RB, and play in squad with some experienced RB player(s). It can be loads of fun, but definitely is a headache solo. In AB you can be successful solo as it doesn't matter you won or lost the match. In RB if you lost the match, it also means you have died.

Indeed its no different at all, except that battles don't last as long as arcade due to the lack of respawns. Also personally EU/RU are not an option, both have pings well over 400ms.

Must just be my luck. I've been teamkilled twice in 65 games, both were deliberate - one on takeoff and one after I shot down an enemy that someone else had decided was his & his alone despite having completely missed the target on 2 previous attacking passes - I have this one on video - and its a pity they remembered how to aim when shooting at me ;) Also been shot at several other times on takeoff but have been able to evade, sometimes with damage.

Again, personally, 90% of my flying is solo. Its just how it is I'm afraid.

I get the impression that RB is geared around having a wingman. From what I've observed, a solo player can't carry a team of potatoes but two players working together stand a much better chance...

Same applies to AB, is it not? You dominate match in squad, but you don't do that solo (unless facing bunch of well, potato's... happens).

And it's not like RB has a lot of room for error in 2vs many situations. If those opponents are halfway decent you will have a hard time, if any chance at all, simply because some can force you to engage them while 1-2 climb above you and then it's over. But they need to coordinate it, which is rare.

I never said dominate. Therein lies my point. You don't have to dominate in AB. It's much easier to turn a match in AB flying solo than I suspect it is in RB. Keep in mind, I'm talking all options here - not just PvP. The only squadron I've never successfully outraced is -Win-. They had a rival in -FLAIR- but I only met them in Air Dom so I could fight them to a draw there. I suspect if I met them in the other two modes, I wouldn't have been able to outrace them either. -EXILE- looks to be made up of members of both of those squadrons so they'll be very hard to beat too.

That said, winning in AB is a hollow achievement a lot of the time. It gets stale very quickly IMO. I know I've put up numerous posts advising how to win games abusing cheesey strategies (flying solo) but it doesn't mean that I find the result or the gameplay satisfying. It is simply a means to an end. Some people want to win and some people don't know the ins and outs of making SL / RP when they aren't topping the scoreboard. My advice is directed at them.

RB looks to be a very different proposition to AB, especially with the aircraft I intend to try (fast but not agile). RB is far more PvP focused and energy is much harder to recover. The value of a wingman shooting bad guys off your tail increases exponentially when conserving energy is so important. I still plan to queue solo and fly wing for someone taking altitude. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that having a wingman guarantees a carry either. I'm saying that having one will increase the odds a lot more than it would in AB (i.e. having a wingman is so much more valuable).

Joined the forum to thank you for your tutorials. I learned a lot, a real lot, from watching them. I even have battles without dieing now, because of your and tx's videos.

Thanks for giving me more fun in the game, and for the laughs in your vids. Thanks

Oh no!!! :(s

Really saddened by your last video, although completely understandable. Your points about the game and then your personal situation make total sense to stop doing these awesome videos. While I enjoy watching Phly regularly, your videos were always the ones I anticipated the most, because they would still teach even a decent player like me new things; they were well-made, had great analysis of mistakes, and of course your moderating skills were outstanding.

Personally I'll still be in the game, as said before, due to the outstanding graphic quality, combined with the great collection of aircraft... but the fun has definitely been lost, due to the points you've mentioned in the video.

Anyway, I want to wish you "Viel Glück" with stemming the real life issues and that you can get them turned around. I'll keep my hopes up that you get it figured out and that we maybe one day see a new video popping up here or on your channel for more great informative ACM tactics etc.

I salute you :salute:

Best regards,

Phil

Long5hot, if you are still taking suggestions, what do you think of the Hurricane Mk IV?  I have been flying it a lot in Arcade lately, but would appreciate your opinion.

Have tried to run Attack tutorial in Arcade; after dropping first bomb I'm instructed to move cursor to the edge.  It does not move.  The mouse cursor is frozen.  I back out and everything is OK.

Running on MAC OS 11.0.03.  Have tried using PC keyboard.  Same result.

Give me 15 min and I will go check it out in windows. you may have run in to a bug with mac war thunder.

Edit: ok so I just completed it with windows. so the tutorial looks like it's working.

a question did you move your mouse cursor to the top edge? or a side edge.

fyi only the top edge will continue the tutorial for you.

If you did and can reproduce the error the next step is to submit a bug report.

Oh, wait!  Yes.  The cursor appears as my gunsight circle.  Moved to top frame. Worked.  What a Ace move!  Thank you for your help!  Ron G.
