Tank Shells and Choosing Your Loadout

Thanks, but am I just having a terrible time or are APCR's and HEAT doing nothing for me? I normally have to use like 7 shells to kill one thing, or in the case of Russians, use Shrapnel shells to the rear of the turret.

Am I using APCR and HEAT incorrectly or is it hit detection/damage models that's screwing my StuG over?

USE APCBC. APCR does less damage after penetration, because it has a smaller diameter and doesnt explode, and once you pen having more pen won't help. In some cases, such as long range at highly angled armour, ABCBC will also pen more than APCR, which loses speed quickly and bounces more.. The long barreled stugs has a good gun, but with the short barreled ones you might wanna stick with HEAT, unless you know you can pen

So I have aTiger 2 tank and my Panther A tank in the tier 4 range of German tanks. I have researched the different types of ammo I can but I have no idea really which to use as I can't see any real difference ingame with them. Anyone have a tip of which ammo I should use?

I'm very surprised you got this far without understanding ammo types 0_O, but unless you are fighting very heavily armored targets, stick with APCBC (APHE is more useful term) for most german tanks.

thanks to LB95 for the information sheets and detailed explanations, and thank YOU ronin3423 for the address to the very well done video.

while looking at the data sheets i decided to change my load out, and after the video i see that the choices i made for change will be the right ones or at least agree with the opinions in the video.

Thanks a lot for this gem I found so late. But not too late, lol.

I like tanking a lot, just as I like flying a lot. In the tank it just feels more intense.

For you get hit once, and either you're already wasted, or in some serious repair-time and crew-kill trouble.

Those one-shot-kills don't happen to me that often in planes, honestly.

Some people out there are really mean snipers.

I like to do that, too. :DD

And I like tanks from all nations. The Russians are nearly from a different planet, so I usually like my German tanks.

I have 3 kinds of shells: a few  Sprgr. 34 (HE) against planes and AAA; PzGr.39 or PzGr.40 against heavies, and the HlGr.38/39 for medium tanks and to finish off wounded tanks.

In my opinion, when you're fighting in towns, use the hollow charge. In open battle, the Pz.Gr.39 should be your main weapon, and use HE only for light vehicles or planes.

It works for me, at least. I immensly enjoyed the tank-event lately, with the PVE-set up, defending artillery against waves of tanks. That's where I really took my time to work out my shells.

The Pzgr.40 is the one which worries me most, so to speak, and I use it against medium tanks mainly.

Again, thanks to the OP for this compilation!

Somewhat unrelated question, but I'm hoping y'all might have some input.  Within reason (by which I mean similar- and same- type shells, does the shell's mass, velocity, or calibre have the largest impact on spalling?  I am curious about the brit 57mm QF 6 pounder (mk9 shell) vs the brit/us QF 75mm (m72 shell).  Similar penetration values, but significantly different shell calibre, weight, and velocity.  I guess I'm looking for some solid info on the damage model as to which has better post-pen damage and why, ignoring everyone's subjective opinions about reload speed/ease of aiming/personal preference/etc.

Thanks

Hi @Flightless_Bird

I'm going to do some searching, get back to you. :)

Though it is somewhat unrelated, it's still generally related to the topic of tank shells. No worries there.

Thanks for taking the time to construct this helpful guide. This has helped me to understand different ammunition types and their purposes, meaning I'll no longer be using HE shells with my 76.2 mm gun. It seemed a little bit excessive with all the diagrams and exposition, but I genuinely enjoyed learning about the shell physics and WHY this shell should have priority over this shell in this situation or that situation. However, you didn't explain what shrapnels are and when they should be used?

Shrapnel or Frag shells are just APHE with more frags and less pen. They are to be used against targets with very thin armor. Like a flakpanzer I.

:016:

Personally for tanks, I use the standard German Pz.Gr 39, which is APHE (if I remembered correctly). It pierces armour reasonably and then does massive amounts of damage.

I've never used HESH rounds, and I never use HE shells because of their poor penetrating ability. It's not like you always face up with SPAAs at a BR of 3.7.

APCR for far range sniping, I try to aim for the gunner (right side of turret)?

I try this threat because I ran into a problem:

Spading Japan rank 4, using M41A1 and both ST-As, in arcade mode.

I have managed to research the HeatFS for the ST-As and APDS for the M41A1.

I am somewhat dismayed by the results. Is this ammo actually better than the M82 (APCBC)? It promises a much better penetration and contains more explosive, but in practice, I think it handles worse.

Perhaps there is something about the use of HeatFS that I don't understand, (or APDS for that matter). What could I be doing wrong?

Thanks for help.

Hello,

Question: I have researched all the ammo modifications for my vehicles, but for some reason I'm only able to use the default ammo given. How can I include my ammo selection while in play. The ammo researched does not appear on the menu at the bottom of the screen while in play. How can I include them?

Post a pic of the researched vehicle and the in-game vehicle selection. Maybe it's a bug. Usually it's quite easy to figure out.

hi,

I believe this is the appropriate thread to ask this question:

I have researched all the ammo in various vehicle's, but I'm not sure how to include them in my rack or magazine of my chosen vehicle, that's displayed at the bottom of my screen when in the field or battle. I'm assuming I'm using the default ammo provided.

Q. How do I move the ammo iv researched in the modifications screen down to my magazine of my chosen while in battle vehicle? Thanx for any help.

OK, so this is all setup on the screen just before you enter the Battle (the 20 seconds or so before physically entering a match).

Once the map is loading and you are in the queue (not the first "join battle" queue but the immediate start to a match) you have time to adjust all the options on the left, this includes ammo types and quantities.

There is currently no feature to preset this in the hangar (well you can actually set the primary ammo selection under Modifications screen but you can't set the rest from here nor the quantity).

There is a limitation and not all ammo types can be added to your "rack" at the same time (usually about 3 options per gun, trying to think of some multi-turreted examples).

Someone might be able to provide a screenshot if you need.
