Today the heavy tank series named after the Soviet Leader himself.

IS-1

 

originally known as the IS-85. Chassis taken from KV-85, mounted D-5T, same as T-34/85 and SU-85. Used a cast, sloped hull design inspired by the KV-13.

 

IS-2

 

 part of a project to upgun the IS as the 85mm mounted on the T-34 provided the same firepower but vastky improved mobility, simplicity and was cheaper to produce. An IS mounting the 100mm BS-3 was tested alongside an IS mounting a 122m A-19. The BS-3 has superior anti-armour capability but the A-19 was a much better general-purpose weapon, which suited the tank's breakthrough role.

 

The frontal armour was also improved, it was still stepped, but the plates were 'blended' with smooth joinery increasing rigidity. The frontal armour could reportedly withstand a KwK 36 88mm shell impact from 1000 metres distance, an improvement over earlier designs.

 

The A-19 provided a huge boost to the gun's power, although it struggled to penetrate heavy German tanks at a distance. The Panther could only be penetrated frontally from 700 metres or closer. The reload time was also very slow, this was mitigated somewhat by an upgrade to the D-25T.

 

IS-2 Model 1944

 

Used the new single-plated sloped hull, 120mm thick, which improved protection and was easier to manufacture. Internal spalling upon shell impact was reduced due to a change in the composition of the tank's armour plates.

 

IS-3

 

Used the same chassis and gun as the IS-2 with a modified hull and new turret, although the road wheels were strengthened. The full front used a 'pike nose' layout; from the front, the two upper hull plates were highly angled, increasing the likelihood of a ricochet. Upper hull sides were angled as well. The IS-3 also used a hemispherical turret providing all-round protection, this turret design would be recognisable on many Soviet cold war tanks.

 

IS-4M

 

Developed alongside the IS-3 as a replacement for the IS-2, the IS-4 used the same chassis but was lengthened with an extra pair of road wheels. It was very heavily armoured, which made it better-protected than the IS-3, but this had a noticeable effect speed and mobility which is why its production run was small, only 250 vehicles. Armed with the D-25T. The modernised IS-4 (the M) used larger, more protective track guards and incorporated extra crew stowage on the hull side.

Both IS-2s use the D-25T in War Thunder, so unfortunately there isn't a difference. Earlier IS-2s made before 1944 used the A-19S, which also used a semi-automatic breech, but the D-25T had improved gearing which meant the breech could be operated more quickly.

If you look at this, it says 100(120)mm.... So maybe there are thicker parts?
