Well i found this very interesting piece of equipment used in WWII by the US .

 

Basically those who are familiar with the German 20mm MG151 gunpods , this is the same thing only with more ammo and it sports two 50.cal guns per unit .

The unit was mainly used in Naval Dive Bombers such as the SBD , Avenger , Helldivers and etc... tho were installed in other planes as the means of a field modification

Couldnt find photos of it being on others but it probably did .

I suppose there's no real harm in adding it, but I don't think it'd be all that useful outside of AB.

I think that it's a nice idea. That hellcat is a bearcat though.

 

Oh and btw: I presume they are all M2 Brownings and not M3's? Maybe later versions were M3's.

Me 262 event or just P51 in general. Not to mention you can never have too much daka on a P47.

Of course more dakka is nice but looking at this giant pod I'd say it'd cause tons of drag, way more than the German gunpods, which would even be bad for a P-47.

I would like to say that the gun pods should be mountable on planes the DID carry it, not planes that COULD HAVE carried it.

however i support this, not just that this is nice addition but there are also people crying that germans have pods on all planes while US planes have nothing :D

As far as i know a quad mount gunpod never existed , maybe you are refferring to the quad mount AA 50.cal ?

And after some search , yes there was a gunpod fitting the M3 Browning machinegun , called the XM-14 . Tho mostly used on helicopters http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._aircraft_gun_pods ( sadly best results i got are from wiki but hey )

There is a picture listing that with the full ammo and stuff , speed loss for a twin engine fighter is around 8 MPH . Tho drag caracteristics are nowhere to be found , judging by the looks of the thing it is at least to some degree aerodynamic ...

 

You cant hurt a thunderbolts drag more than it is now :P

Yes I agree 2x .50s seems kinda weak and is weak look at why the P-40s got the six .50 caliber machine guns instead of 2 in the nose and 4 .30 cals in the wings and if this thing is on the SBD Dauntless it means it will have six .50 caliber machine guns
