With the new tank timeline in the 60s, we can get some interessing vehicles from the early coldwar. Here is one of them, the soviet airbone tank hunter ASU-85.

In 1951 started the developpement of a light assault gun based on the amphibious vehicle PT-76. The first prototype was finished during the second half of 1953.

This new vehicle was using a 85mm gun D-70 with 45 ammo (Max velocity: 1150 m/s) and a 7.62mm machine gun with 2 000 shots.

The armor was really Iow, the most heavily armored area was the glacis (45mm at 30°). The PT-76's engine was kept ont eh first prototype, but replaced by a new 210hp diesel engine on the production vehicles. The ASU-85 had a weight of 15 530kg and could reach 45 Km/h onroad.

Three preserial ameliored vehicles were presented in 1956-57, and after some modifications such as a armored roof, the ASU-85 was adopted during 1958. The mass production started in 1961 and stoppped six years later, The main user of the ASU-85 were the airborne troops: The ASU-85 was one of the rare vehicles able to be airborne, with the ASU-57 (Wich have litteraly no armor). The ASU-85 was able to be transported by helicopters (Mi-6, Mi-10) or transport planes (An-12, An-22, Il-76).

Even if the BMD-1 of the late 60s limited the use of the ASU-85, it remained in service untill 1993 in the soviet/russian army.

The ASU-85 of the Red Army were used in Afghanistan and during the repression of the "Prague spring". A few were also sent to East Germany or Poland, but without use in operations.

What would it bring to the game ?

Ingame, the ASU-85 would assume the role of a light tank destroyer: It have a nice mobility and gun, but a ridiculious armor: Even a tank from the late T1 or the T2 can penetrate it's front armor, a M2A2 would kill it on the flanks. Plus due to the small dimensions of the vehicle, even a shot of a small gun would cause heavy damages.

With the already suggested ASU-57, the ASU-85 would be in a potential airbone tank destroyer line.

So 1960 is after 1965 ?

I'm confused.

I can't even vote No in the poll without choosing a BR for it in the poll

I thought about suggesting another Soviet airborne tank destroyer named the ASU-57 a while back but decided it probably wouldn't work well in War Thunder considering it only has 6 millimeters of armor however this vehicle might work even though it only has 45 millimeters at most.

The ASU-57 is already suggested ;)

It would be nice to form a line with the ASU-85

Do you have penetration data on the gun?

Better than Bulldog.

Support.

I made my fictional USSR tree a while back and this vehicle was in it. Really wish to see it. Actually I hope my entire tree gets in.

We need more variety in the soviet tank destroyer line, enough with the Su-85 - Su-85m and ISU-122(S) This'll do perfectly but i'd look at it as a sniper, or maybe of a glass cannon I suppose

OMG GIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIB

45.jpg

ammo (antitank only, the rest has no interest)

-BR-372 APCBC-HE i bet on roughly 225mm of penetration at 100m, based on its characteristics and compared to KwK43 data in the game.

-3BK7/3BK7M HEAT-FS -------> 300mm of penetration (for 3BK7M, 3BK7 = ~260mm) = 150 or 130mm at 60°

both rounds are respetively the BR-367 and 3BK2M as used on standard 85mm cartridges, but with new names used on the bigger cartridge of the D-70 gun (AFV variant of D-48 ATG), new rotating bands to fit the rifling (for BR-372, 3BK7M doesn't spin in the barrel and is unchanged compared to 3BK2M)

no HVAP or APDS rounds ever issued it seems, even though the BR-367P HVAP could have been easily mounted on the cartridge with different rotating bands. An APDS round similar in design and performance to the 20pdr APDS could also have been made, it would have been fantastic for such a "small" gun.

Anton said in his latest interview that Ground Forces is getting buffed to the 1970s, and Air Forces is moving up to the 60s.
