- War Thunder is crashing before the game launches -

Hey guys,

I have been having problems with my War Thunder (Steam version) over the last few days.

The game (when executed), will not launch, but rather give me a 'Crash' message, asking me to send the information to the dev team.

When I try and 're-run' the game, it says the game is already running. I open the task manager, and sure enough, launcher.exe is running.

I have tried:

-Deleting the files inside the shaders folder

-Deleting the Cache folder

-Clearing the steam-cache folder

-Restarting the PC (multiple times)

-launching 'aces.exe' inside the War Thunder directory

-disabling and enabling overlay

Nothing seems to be working. I even tried to update my drivers, by going into: Device manager, right clicking on my graphics unit, and 'search for updates'. (It didn't find any new updates, and told me my graphics driver is indeed up to date.)

I am running Windows 8.1 x64.

Can anyone help?

Edit: I am not sure if this will help, but in the launcher log folder, there are a few files that might provide needed information. There's also a .txt.fatal file, whatever that is... ):

Is there anything else you guys need me to provide, for you to help me fix my problem? If so, just leave a comment in the thread.

When I execute aces.exe, it gives me two options.

To open the launcher and 'check for updates', or to just launch the game.

'JUST' launching the game worked just fine. But running the launcher, to check for updates and *then* clicking 'play', however does not work.

This obviously can cause a few problems, when needing to update the game etc. But I also really prefer playing War Thunder on steam, rather than not on it (for various reasons).

did you also try to run the launcher.exe with administrator privileges (right-click the launcher.exe -> run as Administrator) ?

Can you remove War Thunder from your steam library, shutdown steam, and restart steam, reinstall launcher/check firewall for aces.exe and launcher.exe ,  re add war thunder folder to steam and "verify game integrity" via steam  if it ask you to download game don't panic just say yes  , it will check folder and see all is there.

give this a quick go and let me know the outcome

Ps: you defiantly have Launcher.exe and aces.exe in your exception list on any and all anti-virus/internet security/malware software.

I just tried this and a few other things, but it keeps on crashing and giving me fatal error messages.. I'm 100% sure that aces and launcher are added to the exception list on my Windows Defender, and Firewall.

Iv been trying to replicate the error's, but i cant , i still get stack errors though. so please try this downloading these  https://www.dropbox.com/s/mtji8nmpdxncs1y/WarThunder.rar?dl=0 extract both files to War-thunder folder and replace. https://www.dropbox.com/s/yhwaryvjbhiecdv/WarThunder2.rar?dl=0 and this one same thing extract to war thunder folder and replace all files. Edit:  add launcher to firewall inbound rules :-)

At 1st we want to just run Launcher from folder not steam. and make sure steam is shutdown

Finger are crossed with this one my friend :salute:

Ok its defiantly something that's stopping the launcher from doing its job on your system. thing is what!! .. don't think its a registry thing or HDD thing could be , don't need another crashdump file as its just going to say the same thing, the launcher just hangs dam it this is frustrating me, had one member this morning use my patch and worked via steam for him .. :dntknw:     If your ok with it  can you upload running services and programs via task manager, screen shots so we may look over anything that could be running stopping this also firewall inbound rules . feel free to block out things you don't want us to see , you seem very computer savvy so don't think i need to give you instruction on how to obtain information iv just asked for?

Is there anything else you need? I didn't really see 'launcher, exe' in the inbound rules list, but maybe it's listed as something else, like AC Launcher..

Wow, surprise surprise, I disabled my firewall completely, and your custom launcher worked... I'm going to quickly try and verify local files, and then launch the original steam version, keeping the firewall completely disabled, and see what happens.

I am so stupid.. it is definitely the firewall causing the problems. I think it would be good to keep the firewall on, but somehow add the launcher to the inbound rules list.. I'm gonna give that a  try now

There we go, I had to allow the launcher.exe manually as an inbound rule (exception), I turned the firewall back on and Voilà, it works. I've never really had any problems with my firewall, in the past.. and I've never had to add a program to the inbound rules before. This has been a vital learning experience for me, and I am sorry for taking up so much your time @Harron21 with such a simple mistake. I really appreciate your trying to help me though :)
