Hello, I am having a MAJOR problem with War Thunder at the moment. The game will not stop running in Steam.

I have rebooted my computer, manually closed steam via Task Manager, and the Game keeps running even when steam isn't open.

I dont have a clue what to. I'm so confused right now. I can't close steam properly and Im sick of it displaying as Im playing war thunder 24/7

Try "End Process" on steam under task manager - that closes out of steam entirely

I have tried completley exiting steam even restarting my PC. It doesnt help

I have the same when i exit the game (sometimes). Steam says I'm still playing it xD. You just end the Steam Client Bootstrapper process.

you should check if the 'continue download when OS starts' and the 'hide launcher to tray on download' options are ticked on

in the launcher settings (wrench icon in the top right corner of the launcher) - in this case the launcher will not quit when you

press on the X but will only be minimized to the system tray (only applies when the launcher is downloading though) and the

launcher will automatically be started when you restart the system (again only applies if it is still downloading ;)

anyway... personally i've disabled / unticked both options.

I'm having this exact problem too. It started with update 1.57 which i couldn't update because of my antivirus. And now it happened again with todays update because obviously i shouldn't need to disable AV to update a game. More specifically it happened after accepting to "verify files" after failure to update.

I've tried force killing the process (launcher.exe) but it tells me it doesn't exist. This really does seem like a weird problem.

aces.exe sometimes freezes up and will not close. My old AV kept trying to block it despite being on my whitelist. There is a really long thread on ACE.exe and GJ offers several work arounds.

I just ran into the exact same problem.  Despite restarting the computer, the Launcher.exe remained.  Neither Task Manager nor Process Explorer could shut it down.  So I went in and force killed it via the command prompt.  Here is a nicely written tutorial on how to do that.

Did you figure out how to fix this? Or if not does anyone know how? The same thing is happening to me.

It says War Thunder is still running but I can't find anywhere to shut it down. I opened through aces.exe in the win64 file but when I signed in it said I needed to close to run the launcher for an update. But when I exited the game it wouldn't let me open the launcher, saying that WT was already running. And here we are, I can't find it anywhere to close it. There is absolutely nothing under the task manager for WT, and if I try to delete the game or anything it tells me to first close WT.

Edit: Kommisar, what do I type to kill the task via the command prompt? I have no idea what the task is called.

it has something to do with the firewall... i think. (or the run.exe itself ^^)

well... let me explain - the run.exe is the updater for the launcher thus it needs access to the internet to fetch the latest version information.

if it's getting blocked by the firewall it kinda gets 'stuck' and cannot finish its job. funny enough the launcher can still start (and update itself

so the run.exe isn't even a 'must have') but with the run.exe still running in the background ofc Steam 'thinks' the game is still running.

and even with the run.exe being allowed to access the internet (through the firewall) the process may get stuck at times (maybe the run.exe

not being able to write the log files etc) so besides checking the task manager for the 'well known' War Thunder executables like the aces.exe,

launcher.exe you will also have to have a look for the run.exe and maybe even for the bpreport.exe (which is the bug reporter - and even

though i haven't seen any reports (yet) of this one getting stuck or crash there's always a chance ^^)

I'd like to know what is the run.exe process and what it does, and especially know why this thing remains active once the game is closed and even remains active even once steam is closed :

Game launched once, closed, steam closed, yet Gaijin leave a process running on my computer, for what purpose ? What is this thing doing here ??

Only way to stop it is to kill the process, previously this was causing steam to tell my the game was still running when trying to close steam, since then the run.exe was probably modified and can still run after closing steam and now without any error message about game running...

I don't have auto updates enables or anything else, firewall disabled so not blocking it at all ... i guess it will be time to install process monitoring tools and check the activity of this thing for files accessed or net access ... Or delegate this to some specialized websites as this is not normal at all ...

PS : sometimes i can even have two run.exe processes running at the same time .

The reason why i wrote my sentence is, that it happens only with Steam-WT (started by Steam).

All other WT installation (5) and even use WT in Steam directory but starting through *exe has not this issue.

I hope this isn't a necro, as this pops up top in a search, but I want to confirm that killing "bpreport" in the Task Manager ends this issue.

most of the time the launcher file is still running in the background but not the game. That's why when you closed bpreport it worked

(bpreport is related to a code that  launches the game)
