Britain`s greatest pilot final takeoff...


Two days ago, on February 21st, 2016, Captain Eric Melrose "Winkle" Brown passed away aged 97. He was the Royal Navy's most decorated pilot and had flown 487 types of aircraft in his lifetime. As a Navy test pilot he also piloted more than 2,400 landings on aircraft carriers. He also was the first pilot to land a two engined plane on an aircraft carrier (a Mosquito). During his career he flew all sorts of planes, from biplanes in the mid 1930s to supersonic nuclear bombers in the 1960s.

He also tested captured german jets, like the Heinkel 162 and the Messerschmitt 262, which he regarded as the "best jet fighter of WW II" (sic)". He took part in the interrogation of captured german war criminals, such as Hermann Göring himself.

 

Captain Brown was awarded with the CBEDSCAFC,  Hon FRAeSRN.
