A little history behind the Object 906

In the mid to late fifties, due the ever growing vulnerability of the existing amphibious light tanks and troop transports, the Soviet armed forces became increasingly interested in an amphibious light tank that could effectively combat the ever evolving medium and main battle tanks of the West. Requests went out to several different plants and offices to design a vehicle for a potential acceptance of contract. One of these examples fell on the desks of the design office of the Volgograd Tractor Plant. One of the most decorated production plants of the Second World War was easily up to the task at hand. Starting in 1960, a concept rendition of the vehicle was designed. After preliminary review, the concept was to be reworked to fit 85 mm D-58 or 90 mm D-62 cannon, which both would be fitted with an autoloader to reduce crew size and the effective overall vehicle size. Upon renovating the design, the concept was accepted to be put forth into prototype stage. Between 1961 and 1962 six prototypes were made, two of which armed with the 85 mm D-58, made its way into military acceptance trials in the Kubinka proving grounds. Unfortunately, the entire concept didn't beat the air-droppable vehicle route, thus it was not accepted into service.

What could it mean in-game?

Now, while realistically the arms race power-creeped this vehicle out of its chance of service, its specifications suit a high-tier (7.7/8.0) light tank quite well. Which in all honesty, light tanks need a little more love in this game than they currently receive. We could get two flavours. The variant armed with 85 mm D-58 and the variant armed with the 90 mm D-62. It basically means a quick tank with virtually no armour and decent firepower. Personally, I'd like to see the 85 mm at 7.7, and the 90 mm at 8.0.

Additional comments

As for the obvious comments because this is Soviet of "dey have enuf tenk" and things along those lines. Write something productive or don't bother. This isn't a suggestion for immediate addition. I don't think any suggestion has ever been that way. Ever. America has light tanks to be added above the T92, Germany has some light tanks for higher tiers, and I genuinely have no clue about Britain. I can only assume so. Light tanks were an asset in virtually every nation realistically, but aren't represented that much in this game. Unfortunately for the Soviets, most of their fielded vehicles went with the way of ATGM's instead of powerful cannons, so we're limited to picking from prototypes unless you want to go deep into the 60's, 70's, and 80's. There's nothing game breaking about these vehicles. Aircraft can kill them for days, and the slightest sneeze from artillery means disaster. Plus only having a compact crew of three, expect one shots for days.

Oh hey, its the PT-85! It would make for a great vehicle to come after the PT-76, but obviously at a much higher br. Was the version with the 90 mm ever completed? I remember hearing that it was only ever at the design stage, but I may be wrong.

What with all of these new Amphibious Soviet boats being suggested I guess the Russians will have a full fleet before anyone else.

Well, maybe. The Soviet military required the 85 mm D-58 to be used, although Volgograd proposed to use their 90 mm D-62. The module including the automatic loader were made and tried in test beds, but not ever fitted due to the stubbornness of military trial requirements. Although, some sources say after the trials one was fitted, I have yet to see any true evidence of such.

Your poll does not have a "No" or "Later" option.

It's not asking if it should be added though. Although it has been reworded for clarity.

While it isn't, I think it should... Anything that makes it easy for the developers to say, "Yep, that one! Look at all of the support!" (Or... something to that effect).

I'm going to vote no on the 90 mm version for the moment then, please inform me if you found some reliable sources for it existing in real life.

Voted for 7.3 and 7.7.

Choogle, do you have a picture of what the Object 906 D-62 would've looked like?

Thanks Wulf. I guess it slipped my attention.  8/s

Also added additional options in poll.

Same thing with a different cannon. Vehicle was designed with both cannons in mind.

While not the same vehicle, the 90 mm D-62 looked like this on a sister project:

I mean, there's enough serviced vehicles and prototypes that there can be a relatively well filled out line of light tanks for the Soviets. Same would go with the Americans. But I'm not too sure if anyone other than the Soviets, perhaps the French, did wheeled vehicles with large guns.

Looking at its highly angled paper armor I am afraid it might actually bounce more shots than an actual thick armor because of BS troll RNG bounce mechanic.

I can agree with more Light tanks.  So why not?

Well, with ATGM's on the horizon I don't think there's any shortage of light tanks with those on all sides of the table.

Eh, part of me wonders just how well these missiles will work.... LT's wont really move fast enough to avoid them... will they?
