Unable to access steam overlay and purchase items using steam

I have war thunder installed through steam, when I open the launcher it displays on steam that I am playing war thunder but as soon as I press play on the launcher and the actual game opens it sets my status to online instead of being in war thunder. Along with that I am no longer able to use the steam overlay by pressing shift+tab and I am not able to purchase items in the store with my steam wallet. I have went into the steam properties for war thunder and I have overlay enabled but it still does not work. Please help.

hmm... just been starting my game from Steam (haven't started Steam for some time (maybe a week ?!?) and just received a Steam update ^^)

and i can open the Steam overlay without problems oO (and i'm also getting the Steam wallet option when i open the shop)

 

do you actually see the Steam login button on the War Thunder login screen (just underneath the normal login button) ?

if not you should close Steam completely and restart it - most of the times the steam login button will be available again after a restart and i 

assume those issues may be related so a plain and simple restart of Steam may help you as well 8D
