New graphic settings explained with high-end desktop (Ground Forces)

Hi guys,

First of all  great thanks to Gaijin for Dagor engine 5.0. To be honest, War thunder has monstrous visions in all games available i have ever seen now. Seriously realistic and  sits far beyond in terms of quality  compared to its western counterparts. I dont think any other engine will get even close that vision any time soon.

Luxury comes with price and sacrifice. They mentioned that  Super sampling Anti- Alisaing option with dagor engine 5.0 will be available for players who owns Top-Tier graphic cards.

I consider my self as an Top class system owner with my i7 6700k and GTX 1070.  There is only 2 more better card in market now which are 1080 and 1080 ti. Also i using 1440p monitor with 60 Hz.

Before the 1.77 update i was getting around 100 fps in 1440p with every possible graphics setting is maxed out . Situation changes with 1080p monitor instead of 100 fps to 120 fps. 20% fps difference between 1080p to 1440p. But anyway i do use Adaptive sync to fix it 60 fps due to stabilisation issues. I will mention to graphic card performance stats in below ( tempature, Usage, Fan rpm etc.)

With the 1.77 update if i enable Super sampling Anti- Alisaing , My average FPS sits around 30.

My friend has a 1080 Ti and he gets around 50-55 fps in 1440p. Which is quite annoying because best card in market cant even reach stable 60 fps with that setting.  ( 4x Super sampling anti alisaing)

Yes it is awesome. Yes it does impact in vision, And yes it needs a lot of power of GPU.  I just want to tell we have only None or 4x setting now. Maybe we should have an option that somewhere in middle like 2x Ssaa? i dont know if it is possible just asking. More enginering miracle that gets better results with out sacrifice quality?:good:

Thanks for all of you to your opinions!!

Card stats for Gigabyte gtx 1070 winforce, All stats are stable after 1 hour play.

Patch 1.75 with full settings 1440p, 100 fps -  65 Celcius and %30 Fan speed (1000 rpm) - 50% GPU usage.

Patch 1.77 with full settings 1440p, 30 fps - 75 Celcius and %60 Fan Speed (2000 rpm) - 100 % GPU usage.

Patch 1,77 with full settings 1440p, except SSAA 4x - 80 fps - 65 Celcius %40 Fan Speed (1400 rpm) - 60% GPU usage.

SSAA is super sampling so x4 is the game trying to be rendered in 4k if you're running 1080p resolution In 1440p its even higher. That's why your friend's 1080ti took such a performance hit. Turn it off and crank normal AA to maximum and you'll have 120-144 fps again even with a 1070 (I turn off stuff like lense flares but keep textures max). My 1080 dipped from 144 to 90 with it on. It looks good, but will blur out that's why SSAA is good for scenery purposes but doesnt warrant the hit in a game like WT like in high pace jet combat.

Are you running 1080p? As you mentioned i would turn it off. Its just for screenshot lol.  You can take solid 60 fps with it on. What would you prefer? SSAA 60 fps or 144 fps without SSAA.

If you do some quick calculations 1440p is 2560 x 1440. So 4x SSAA makes it 5120x 2880. So a total of 14,745,600 pixels are getting rendered. By comparison a 4K screen only has 8,294,400 pixels

1440p

ASUS 144hz 1440p monitor

i7-6700K at 4.2GHz

MSI GTX 1080 stock clock

(I used to play on GTX 1070 :P)

SSAA looks good-ish in a still frame as it's trying to simulate a 4k experience on a monitor that is not 4k native so some spots will blur especially if you throw around the camera. However still frames or situations where you dont need buttery smooth frames in WT terms example: slow game-play on Kursk/Normany in tank realistic or sim; it can look great and close to the real deal. 1440p setups are already pretty demanding and SSAA isn't necessarily needed, but the new Anti-Aliasing from Dagor 5 is a godsend for 1440p regarding distance rendering. Triangles in the distance are now plane silhouettes for me.

SSAA: A line can only be shown as a collection of pixels, and therefore appears jagged unless it is perfectly horizontal or vertical. The aim of supersampling is to reduce this effect. Color samples are taken at several instances inside the pixel (not just at the center as normal), and an average color value is calculated. This is achieved by rendering the image at a much higher resolution than the one being displayed, then shrinking it to the desired size, using the extra pixels for calculation.

Yes a saa could use some lower settings. I find txaa to be good enough and doeznt impact performance too much currently  and will improve with patches.

SSAA 4X is overkill, you might as well just increase the backgroundscale. Same effect, less performance drop.

Also, be aware that upscaling makes planes considerably harder to spot, which can put you at a disadvantage.

you can set lower super sampling values in the config.blk in your WT directory.

with SSAA=4 (2.0 Super Sampling) set in the launcher you will find there:

  backgroundScale:r=2
  ssaa:r=4

for 1.5 Super Sampling set

  backgroundScale:r=1.5

and make that file write protected

i believe ssaa:r=4 is only the state of the switch in the gui and can be ignored but if you like you could aswell adapt it to

ssaa:r=2 or just delete that line

so far i feel this works best for me and i can max out everything (without extra AA) at WQHD (1440p) and get constant vsynced 60 FPS with my MSI 1080 8GB (no TI) in Ground Forces which is i assume more demanding than Air Forces games.

try to increase or decrease backgroundScale by 0.1 steps to find your optimal value for your screen resolution and graphic card. Be aware that it is exponential so the higher you go the more each step will cost.

hope that helps :)

problem with the messing with the blk file is then you get that annoying popup.

As @Fog_of_War said, I haven't noticed the popup anymore.
