In the early 80s, after NATO unveiled their new generation of MBTs, it was becoming apparent that the T-80 would need a major upgrade to compete. It would receive the designation of Object 219AS and the more recognized T-80U. The “U” comes from the word improved in cyrillic (uluchenny/улучшенный). The main upgrade was going from Kontakt-1 to Kontakt-5. A “heavy” ERA which added protection for both HEAT based munitions and KE. It would alos recive a new 1250 HP gas turbine engine, to accommodate the added weight. Those upgrades and the new FCS would make the T-80U one of the deadliest MBTs built by the Soviet Union.

The T-80 is literally the number one reason I am playing Russian tanks.  When they added the Leopard 1, I started to get the hit the Gaijin was going Cold War, and once they started adding vehicles from the late 70’s, I knew soviet MBT would come some day.  When they added the T-64A and the MBT/KPz-70, composite armor was opened up as a feature in WT and when I recently saw the devblogs for the T-64B, Abrams, challenger, Leo 2, etc.  people thought ‘OMG M1 ABRAMS’, I thought ‘hehe, only a matter of time now...’

it'll only be a matter of time so +1 for when that time comes.

either this and/or the Ukrainian T-80UD with the weaker but more reliable engine would work.

reliablility is not modeled ingame. otherwise at least 50% of all Chieftains would have a broken engine at the start of every game

Sure once:

1) tier 7 is a thing.

2) there are counterparts (i.e. Leopard 2A4, M1A1HA, Challenger 1Mk3, Type 90, Leclerc Serie 1, Ariete).

3) the other newer vehicles have been balanced (via BR!).

you really think Tier 7 will be a thing? i dont thinks so. i think that they will throw everything in T6....

can we wait until modern fcs and regenerative steering

because whats the point of a t80u if you cant even use the glorious agava-2 on the t80uk

Sorry, just a cheap jab at the issue of immediate spawn attacking on some maps in this game. I'd just come out of a game on Karelia where my Chieftain had it's engine shot almost immediately after leaving spawn. Nevermind, carry on :D.

Reliability was only a issue when you didn't use the tank for long periods, so if they was to model that as long as you drove every day it would be fine. just break down on the 1st game. you just spawn in and you watch your crew dismount throw there head sets off and kick the side skirts as you get a return to garage tab. But guess what Chieftain wouldn't be the only tank to suffer this.

If they throw everything into tier 6 they will create a mess. There will be too much powercreep.

As an M1A1 counter not exactly.

Not unless its the M1A1 HA

With the M1A1 that gajin had already teased I think The T-80BV would be a be more balanced opponent. T80U is just kind of hard to balance Given its Protection and Its insane mobility.

If the T-80U gets the 3BM-46, sure

Had to vote no on this one.  If it'd been the T-80B or BV I would of probably voted yes.  As those would be more evenly balanced versus the M1 Abrams or M1A1.

Sadly once you get past M829 with the 120... the ammo goes nuts.  So even M829A1 would be hard to balance against.  Even 3bm46 doesn't compare well to M829A1, from the information I have on hand.  German DM43 or 53 come close, but still.

  • Thanks 5
