Thanks to Tarepai for inspiring this suggestion.

The Kawasaki Ki-66 was the result of Japanese efforts to create a land-based dive bomber and attack aircraft for the Japanese army.  Impressed by the successes of the Ju 87 Stuka in the early years of the war in Europe, Kawasaki attempted to modify their Ki-48 "Lily" bomber to produce a similar aircraft.  The glazed nose was removed and replaced with a solid nose mounting two 12.7mm machine guns for strafing runs, and the crew was reduced to just a pilot and one gunner for the two defensive machine guns.  Dive brakes were also added to the wings.  Testing revealed the aircraft to be barely an improvement over the existing Ki-48, and the program was cancelled after eight aircraft were built.

In War Thunder, the Ki-66 would be a useful low-tier attacker in the Japanese army line.  The two 12.7mm machine guns are an improvement over the armament of other attackers at its tier, and the dive brakes would make it a good dive bomber.

I hadn't heard of this aircraft before this thread, it would make for a nice low tier attack aircraft for tank realistic. I support it.

  • Thanks 1

+1 :salute:

This should be added along with the Ki-48s.

BTW in your post you keep calling this a Nakajima aircraft when it was a Kawasaki aircraft.

Thanks for pointing that out.  I must have gotten things confused.

Thank you for your support!  I want the Ki-48s too.

A rather good looking attacker, with reasonable gun armament and payload if it is placed at a suitably low BR. Definitely would help flesh out the options for Japanese ground attack aircraft even if it's not much of a gap plug for the Tech Tree.
