Hello,
can I ask you to consider adding a new tank to the game? I think with the advent of new and modern tanks in the game, adding some improved version of Patton to the game is very interesting. These are the Magach tanks, the Magach 3 tank has already been added to the game. So I decided to try to send a proposal to add more Magach tanks. Such as Magach 6, 7A or 7C. Thank you in advance for the answer and I also add the technical specifications and history of the Magach tanks.

History of Magach tanks

The Magach range of modifications started right after the 1967 war and was intended to gradually improve the M48 and later the M60. These were minor changes at first, but gradually in the late 1970s and 1980s, IDF tries various armor packages and armament for urban warfare, especially with the experience of the Lebanon war. Mobility was improved with better engines and transmissions, better optics, new cupolas, local FCS, improved local laser rangefinders, communication sets, and eventually tracks, mantlet, thermal sleeves, suspensions, etc. The name itself, “Magach” is used but not really officialized and its origin is quite mysterious. It could be either “Rammin Hit”, “Chariot of War heroes” contraction, M48A3 in gematria or in other forms, “electric shaving machine” “sloping belly” or even “Movil Gviyot Charukhot” (charred bodies carrier) in reference to the 1973 losses due to flammable M48 hydraulic fluid.

Magach 6

Magach 6/7 is a series of Israeli tanks, based on the American M60 Patton Tanks. From the 1970s, the M60s were upgraded in a number of areas including the addition of an Israeli-developed thermal sleeve for the 105 mm gun, the addition of Israeli-developed explosive reactive armour, installation of a new Urdan commander’s cupola (also adopted by the US Army for its M48A5 tanks), two roof-mounted 7.62 mm machine guns and the Israel Military Industries CL-3030 instantaneous self-screening system either side of the main armament. It is believed that the M60 series fitted with ERA were called the MAGACH-6 and 7 for the latest version. It is understood that these have now been replaced by later and enhanced versions. In the beginning, the first Magach was an upgrade of M48A3 main battle tank, it was the Magach 3. By the time the 1973 Yom Kippur War erupted, some 800 Magach 3 were in active service, in addition to some original configuration M60 (Magach 6). During the 1980s and 1990s, the Magachs were gradually replaced with Merkava tanks as Israel’s front-line main battle tank. However, the large majority of the IDF’s armoured corps continued to consist of Magach variants until the 1990s, and the tank was continuously upgraded during this time. Prior to the 1982 invasion of Lebanon (1982 Lebanon War), Magach 6 tanks were fitted with explosive reactive armor (ERA). Further work has been done on the upgraded Magach 6 models, including new armor, Merkava based tracks, new fire controls, a thermal sleeve for the gun and smoke dischargers, eventually resulting in the Magach 7 model which is still in use with the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces).

Technical specification:

Modifications included a gradual improvement of tank armor (first by installing a reactive armor, later a modern passive armor), installing newer and more powerful propulsion units along with gearboxes and, of course, improvements to electronic systems and tank software (radio equipment, fire control system).
As with the other tanks used by the Israeli army, the Magach 6 Series tanks are powered by machine guns lagged on the tower. However, as with all Israeli machines, machine guns known as anti-aircrafts are used to suppress the enemy's uncovered live force. These are two 7.62 mm FN MAG / M240 guns that are attached to the commander and charger hoods. On the cradle of the main is mounted M2HB machine gun, 12.7 mm caliber. It is coupled with a cannon and the gun is controlled remotely from inside the tank (in newer versions).

Magach 7(A,C)

The Magach 7 is a comprehensive upgrade package for Israel's M60 series tanks, which was the mainstay of the IDFs armored corps. The Magach 7 is a further development of the Magach 6. It entered service with the Israeli Defense Forces in the 1980s. It has significantly improved capabilities over the original US M60 series tanks. In particular its armor protection was vastly improved.

Blazer armor of the previous Magach 6 has been replaced with thick slabs of passive armor, which gives more protection. As a combat account in which salvos of AT-3 Saggers were fired at a Magach 7A in an ambush launched by Hezbollah. Out of the twenty Saggers that hit the tank only two managed to penetrate the roof of the tank which wasn't covered by the applique armor. The ensuing fires were quickly snuffed out by the Nachel Oz fire detection and suppression system thus leaving a surviving crew. An operation analysis was conducted by the IDF in which they discovered that if the tank was protected by explosive reactive armor rather then passive armor nine of the shots would've penetrated the tank. The Magach 7 which features side-skirts. The first two sections of the skirts feature ballistic material and are hinged for easy access to the running gear. The rear skirts are made of steel. All the skirts are fitted to heavy-duty springs to prevent them being ripped-off while maneuvering. Applique armor has been fitted to the glacis plate and to the turret, giving this MBT it a radically new look.

This main battle tank is fitted with new fire control system with a laser rangefinder.

Engine of the Magach 7 is an improved version of the previous Continental AVDS-1790-2C. The new AVDS 1790-5A is rated at 908 hp and retains a 80% commonality of parts with the older AVDS 1790-2C. The transmission is automatic and sourced from the Merkava Mk.1. It has two forward and one reverse gears. The improved suspension of the Magach 7 features additional shock absorbers fitted to the first, second and sixth roadwheels. Hydraulic bumpers have also been added to first, fifth and sixth roadwheels. High strength torsion bars were fitted as standard. The traveling distance has been increased from 180 mm to 200 mm, and energy dissipation has increased by an impressive 355%. It is fitted with tracks of the Merkava Mk.1. These improvements gave the Magach 7 a much improved cross-country performance, compared to the M60 Patton. As a result weapon stability was enhanced and crew comfort was improved.

The main armament of the Magach 7 is still the L7/M68 105-mm rifled gun as fitted to earlier M60s but now with a bolt-on thermal sleeve for improved accuracy. The main gun fires the full range of 105-mm NATO ammunition which include APFSDS, HEAT, HESH, HE, APERS, and canister rounds. The M73 machine gun has been replaced by an FN MAG. Bulky cupola of the M60 has been replaced by a low-profile Urdan cupola fitted with an FN MAG. The loader has his own 7.62 FN MAG as well. A 12.7mm M2HB can be fitted to the roof of the turret atop the mantlet for sub-caliber training or urban combat.

The Magach 7 is 9.43 meters long, 3.63 meters wide, 3.25 meters tall, weighs 55 tonnes, and has 0.83 kg/cm² ground pressure. It can ford 1.2 meters of water, and can climb a 60% slope along with a 30% side slope.

The Magach 7's were gradually replaced by Merkava tanks in front-line units, however these MBTs are still in service with reserve units.

Not sure if there's all that much of a point in adding them, the Magach 6 would just be a M60A1 RISE (p) except for:

  • Smaller cupola.
  • M111 instead of M735.
  • Blazer ERA instead of RISE ERA.

As long as Gaijin continues the M60 mantlet meme, I don't think any M60 variant will be all that anticipated.

  • 3 months later...

If you get past rank 1-2 being armored cars, APCs, halftracks, and export vehicles, I actually think there are enough tanks for an Israeli tech tree in the potential distant future.  I mean, counting the Magach, there are like 10+ unique variants and subvarients of the Magach tanks alone, not to mention the Sho’ts (also 10+ potential variants), M50 and M51, a couple other tanks like the generic M60, and the crown jewel of such a tree being the Merkava I, II, and III, (just counting MBTs/Medium tanks only), they have more non-prototype options rank 3-6 than France does, and future Italy.
