島風型駆逐艦

Shimakaze class Destroyer

Shimakaze.jpg

Shimakaze, under trial cruise. (March 5, 1943)

Classify

  • Class of the vessel: Class 1 Destroyer / 一等駆逐艦
  • Classify in project: Type C Destroyer (Type Hei Destroyer) / 丙型駆逐艦
  • Project number: F52   (NOT pennant number or others)

About "Shimakaze"

Shimakaze is Japanese Class 1 destroyer build during WW2.

This is high-speed, heavy torpedo armaments fleet destroyer, but in start of Pacific war IJN's tactics were changed and it has bit high-cost for production. Because of it only Shimakaze was build and production changed to Akiduki-class (Type Otsu) and Matsu-class (Type Tei).

There are two noteworthy points of Shimakaze.

1. This is the highest vessel in Japanese Navy: 40.90 knots in Overload test! (Plan: 39 knots, Trial: 40.37 knots)

Surprisingly, Japanese warship / boat that faster than this is only No.1 class guided-missile patrol boat (46 knots). Also, Japanese torpedo boat that speed reach to 40 knots is only JMSDF No.11 class.

This means in game it is easy to break away from unfavorable battlefield.

2. This have 15 torpedo tube (3x 5 tube) for Type 93 mod.3 61cm torpedo!

This torpedo had very good specification: Explosives 780 kg, and range is 48knots/15,000m or 36knots/30,000m!

Now in game Fletcher class / Allen M . Sumner class have 2x 5 tubes and it was good advantage, so able to launch 15 torpedo in one time will be very good advantage!

Off course there are some weak-points.

Shimakaze have only 2x twin 25mm MG and 1x twin 13.2mm MG. After modification get more MGs, but if Gaijin select to add newly built, it will be too powerless.

Are there any good pictures to show where her extra MGs would be? The English wikipedia page says there was a total of 28 of the 25mm MGs but I'm not sure where those would be, or if that number is the same for the Japanese wikipedia page.

28 is total number of barrels could be well in triple/dual mounts.

16 × 25 mm (1 in) anti-aircraft guns (4x3, 2x2) (increased in June to 28)

also since someone didn't mention, i don't know about Shimakaze, but previous destroyer (Yugumo) carried additional torpedoes for single reload of every tube.

still that don't exactly address weakness in gunfight against other ships, but that isn't strength of Japan vessels until heavy cruisers.

I have to disagree. With proper skill you could make it work. Back in pre-beta HE was terrible yet i still managed to do good on thr Yugumo. Now HE is much much better being able to do much higher damage. Also most IJN DDs if not almost all could carry torp reloads including some cruisers. We all ready have ships in game with slow rpm, only he and lower caliber guns some aregood some are bad i'd say it really depends who is using the ship.

Who is using ship matters the most.

I didn't sad that they are straight garbage in term of firepower, but that it isn't their stronger side (equal player scenario)

You have lower RPM, Lower HE power and slower traverse combined together.

If you're going to let loose the 'Shimakaze' into War Thunder...& who wouldn't want to have her in some naval fights...then you may as well add the 'Shiratsuyu-class' destroyers.

Sure they're not as fast as the 'Shimakaze' (Each ship had a top speed of 34 knots, compared to 40 knots on 'Shimakaze')... they're not as well primarily armed [ 5 '5-in' (2 x 2, 1 x 1)] compared to 'Shimakaze' [6 '5-in.' (3 x 2)]...also less torpedoes ('Shiratsuyu'-class had 16 for its 8 torpedo tubes (2 x 4), compared to 20 for its 15 torpedo tubes (3 x 5) for 'Shimakaze')...but the 'Shiratsuyu-class' had 36 depth charges, twice as many as the 'Shimakaze', which had 18 of them for its two depth-charge throwers. The last major drawback, unfortunately, was this well-known fact: Out of the 10 ships of the 'Shiratsuyu-class' that were built between November,1933 & August,1937,none survived WW2...5 were sunk by U.S. submarines, 3 others were victims of U.S. surface forces, one was sunk by air attack, & the lead ship was lost after colliding with a Japanese tanker.

Regardless, let's give the 'Shiratsuyu-class' another well-deserved shot at proving themselves their combat-worth. If this destroyer class joins the Imperial Japanese Navy tech tree, they just might make it...& besides, someone might want to take the helm of 'Yudachi', & send some unwary opponent a major dosage of "POI!!!" (I couldn't help putting that last bit in there...It's hilarious!!! XD)

I think that is probably a quote from 「あ号作戦後の兵装増備の状況調査」(In English,"Survey on the status of arming addition after Operation A-Go"June 30, 1944 Survey).
