Classify

"甲型警備船 /  Class Ko (Class A) security ship", DD

*"JS" means "Japan Ship". Nowall Japanese "Self Defense Ship" use this prefix, but in that time they use "JSD" (Japan Defense Ship)

About Harukaze-class

Harukaze class is Japanese first "escort ship/ 護衛艦" built after war.

Participants in that time think the first ship of rebuilt "Navy" should have meaningful name. First ship named JS Harukaze/はるかぜ (DD-101) and second ship named JS Yukikaze/ゆきかぜ (DD-102). Harukaze was very active in maritime escort battle, and Yukikaze is known fortune ship and fought bravely from the begging to the end of the Pacific war.

Designed by "Japan Ship Design Association" because in that time JMSDF did not have enough experience.

In 1953, the Diet approve budget for new ships for JMSDF.

  • 2x Class Ko Security ship (1600 t, DD)
  • 3x Class Otsu Security ship (1000 t, DE)
  • 6x Class Hei Security ship (40~60 t, PT)
  • 1x Supply and Repair ship (1000 t, ARC) *this is secret name of minelayer Tsugaru
  • 2x Large mine sweeper (600 t)
  • 4x Medium mine sweeper (320 t, MSC)

Class Ko was Harukaze and Yukikaze, and Class Otsu was Akebono, Ikaduchi, and Inazuma.

Design of Class Ko was based IJN Shiratsuyu class and USN Allen M. Sumner-class.

This class was designed for Escort and Anti-sub patrol. (Literary translation of 護衛艦 is Escort ship)

Weapons were lend from USN by the MSA, so equipment is same as destroyers during WW2.

Harukaze use Mitsubishi-Escher Wyss steam turbine, and Yukikaze use Mitsubishi-Westinghouse steam turbine.

For game

The first build ship of JMSDF is very curious, so very fit for row BR premium destroyer.

Quad Bofors Mk.2 and Mk.30, 5-inch gun will be very useful for shot down aircrafts, and it is easy to destroy MTBs by Bofors.

It can launch torpedo is only one from one side, and its small. Also in newly build it did not have any torpedo.
