HOTAS for new players

Welcome to Warthunder.  I've been playing a year and a half or so and use a TM HOTAS X ($49)

my config is a reflection of the refinement I've put into this (arguably superior) control method.  Warthunder offers incredible customizability and I know Im just scratching the surface here.

Anyway

If you don't type well

have neuropathy or some other sensory / mobility issue

were born before 1990

have driven a caterpillar

have ever punched a keyboard

then a setup like this is a good consideration.  The only other person in warthunder using this right now is my old man who just survived cancer.  He's a real killer in here, but wouldn't be able to play without a HOTAS setup.

I'm offering to shadow a couple interested folks who will put the time in to learning a new instrument.

If you are interested I going it alone, then here is my key mapping and configuration file just to give you perhaps a starting point.

Here is my config

pic of the system.  mouse is just used for artillery and to navigate the game menus.

Well I was most definitely born before 1990 and have been computer gaming since about 1984 so I've no problem using keyboard and mouse! :p:

Anyway that aside, I'm having great trouble getting my throttle settings to give me the smooth & progressive power transition that I should be experiencing. The best I've been able to achieve in WT is a neutral point at the mid position on the throttle range, so I have to increase power to the desired percentage then move the control back to the mid position to maintain that percentage. This is obviously in no way how the throttle should behave.

I've played around with the setting using both my HOTAS X and my TM Cougar but to no avail, anyone got any suggestions please?

:)

I despise them for driving games and in that length of time, please tell me you haven't punched a few :)  your mileage may vary with this configuration.  You already have all your bad habits with that other set up.

you mean, more than the keyboard? :)

for my set up, the center detent on the throttle is neutral with maximum deadzone

Advancing from this neutral detent starts the tank moving forward and moving the throttle to the rear will put the tank into reverse.

the rocker I use for my steering, when lightly engaged, will move the tank forward in granny gear without turning until more input is made.  Hope that makes sense491709390_WarThunderScreenshot2019_03.31

Ah bugger, we're at crossed purposes, I assumed you were referring to aircraft for HOTAS use. I really don't have any trouble using keyboard/mouse for tanks. I'm trying to achieve normal linear throttle progression for aircraft use in the way every other sim does by default but WT is weird about it. I'll keep tinkering with the settings. Fortunately I'm preferring playing armour at the moment so it's not a big problem as I'm happy with KB & mouse for that.

well, I do both

I freakin HATE mouse aim.  One of the most significant travesties to ever befall simish gaming.

So, I play REALISTIC GROUND FORCES with my HOTAS for armor with a custom configuration that is posted here.

I also play REALISTIC AIR BATTLES with REALISTIC controls.  In the air, you turn over a bit of an advantage to the enemy who is still flying with the aid of instructors and flying in simplified mode, but whatever.  You don't have to do trim, you have look back and virtual cockpit so it's not as hard core as it sounds and I swear, unless you know your ACM very well, HOTAS and realistic controls are not much of a hinderance in Air RB.

It's recommended to use the full joystick set up and not a hybrid that mouse aims while the throttle does throttle stuff.

Hi,

Found your post today when searching for configs to use with War Thunder and Thrustmaster HOTAS One flight stick (for Xbox\PC). Appreciate you sharing your setup and info. The link https://live.warthunder.com/post/823015/en/ no longer works and I've not yet found the F.A.Q and Tutorials o7 that Shuri_96 created or moved this. Can you tell me where that is or share the config again?

Thanks!
