New player with some questions

Just got this downloaded last night and started playing a little today.  A friend of mine has played previously and we tried to squad up.

I understand how if he's playing a nation with higher tiered tanks available it's going to put me into a higher tier match; however, I've got something else happening.  I played about 10 matches myself earlier and had no problem getting some kills and doing some damage.  Later he joined me and we ran into the higher tier issue.  So he swapped to a nation he didn't have any progression in previously.  The odd thing is, when I'm playing by myself I'm doing damage and getting kills, but when we're in squad, it literally seems like nothing is getting penetrated at all suddenly.  Same level vehicles, he's using a nation that's at the same tier as mine.  But literally, I go from getting green pen markers playing alone to nothing but red on the same tanks squaded with him.  Does his or other players "level" have anything to do with the difficulty in the match?  Should the penetration be getting affected by this at all?  It doesn't seem like it should since we're both using tier 1 tanks and neither of us is using a nation with higher tiers available.

This has nothing to do with angling armor.  I'm talking about sitting right behind an enemy tank and unloading into it's back side and the pen marker is red, unlike when I'm alone and it's green.

To simply answer your questions directly:  No, a player's level has nothing to do with the difficulty of the match or whether something can penetrate anything else.  All a player's level indicates is his/hers collective experience they've gained.  It has no in-game/battle effect, not even in matchmaking.

As long as the both of you kept a tight line-up of similar BR (Battle Rating, not the same as Rank/Teir) tanks (such as used only reserved vehicles), you should face similar foes as when you fight alone.  If you still have questions about "Matchmaking", the system that pits you against other players in random battles, see this wiki about it and you can ask what you don't understand: https://wiki.warthunder.com/index.php?title=Matchmaker

When dealing with reasons of why something doesn't penetrate, even if your right behind the tank, it's best to state what tank you were in, what tank you were shooting at, as well as the ammo used if you know these.  If you've forgotten to take note/can't remember these, you can always open up a replay to review the battle that can be found under Community at the top left of the hangar/garage.

Lastly, if you do figure out the above, you can always use the Protection Analysis tool to figure out how to punch a tank with what in what directions.  Just select the tank you want to shoot at in the research tree and selecting Preview/Customization on it, view the armor, and a button for Protection Analysis will appear in the stat card.
