Sd.kfz 124 Wespe

The Sd.kfz Wespe was a German self-propelled howitzer built on the chassis of the Panzer II Ausf. F light tank.  The success of Panzer II-based Marder II tank destroyers encouraged the Wehrmacht to consider a self-propelled howitzer of similar design in order to provide highly mobile light fire support for panzer divisions.  The chassis was modified to move the engine to the middle of the vehicle, opening up space in the rear to expand the fighting compartment.  It had a crew of five; the driver sat in a cramped compartment in the forward hull while the other four crew members sat in the open fighting compartment at the rear.  32 rounds were carried for the howitzer; vehicles were also often accompanied by an ammunition carrier variant of the Wespe that removed the howitzer and could carry 90 rounds to supply other vehicles.  A 7.92mm MG34 machine gun was often placed on a swivel mount on the right side of the fighting compartment for defense against infantry.  Wespes were built from February 1943 to June 1944, when the factory producing them was captured by Soviet troops; 676 vehicles were made in this time.  The Wespe proved to be reliable, highly agile, and very effective in its intended role, so much so that Hitler ordered all Panzer II chassis production go toward the Wespe project.  Wespes fought extensively on both the Eastern and Western front as well as in the Italian campaign.  Crews praised the reliability and agility of the vehicles but complained about its cramped interior and poor protection against enemy fire.  

 

The Wespe would make for an excellent addition to the German self-propelled howitzer line in War Thunder!

How has this not been passed for consideration yet? We have a new artillery for Russia and Sweden yet we are still missing some such as this big SPG. Arise from the ashes fallen thread and make yourself known again for we require the vehicle shown to smite our foes. +1

Wespe - another SP artillery piece with no real place in the game........  why bother?  Yeah I know they are running out of actual tanks to bolster hte finances...  and it is getting silly enough with hte oines that do have turrets let alone this victim!
