T-28 Model 1936: Marginally Better

Much like the T-28 Model 1934, the T-28 Model 1936 is an earlier modification of the T-28 already in-game, armed with the KT-28 gun. Compared to the Model 1934, there are only a few minor differences, creating a nearly identical vehicle. 

 

The only complete surviving Model 1936 is in Moscow. There are two other wrecks in Finland without their guns, so it is impossible to know whether or not they are Model 1936 or 1938.

 

OVERVIEW

As with the Model 1934, the T-28 Model 1936 is basically the same as the T-28 Model 1938, except with the inferior KT-28 gun. The turret has been modified from the Model 1934 to become the same as the Model 1938, with two hatches and the P-40 AA machine gun mount. Its similarity to the Model 1934 would give it the same BR as suggested for it, 1.7, and beneath the superior T-28 Model 1938.

This tank is either a Model 1934 or an early Model 1936; the rear engine grille has the single vertically opening hatch, while the other defining features, the turret roof and rear wheels, are not visible.

Here is a Model 1936 with the vertically opening engine grille. The turret hatches are hard to identify, but they are the circular type.

 

HISTORY

With the creation of the T-28 Model 1934, the Soviet Union had its first mass-produced medium tank. It was one of the best in the world, being very fast, well-armed, and decently well-armored. However, the Soviets knew that it could go further. They started with small improvements. 

 

In 1936, they began production of tanks with steel wheels on the 4th and 5th suspension bogies. That same year (possibly simultaneously), a new turret roof was introduced, housing two hatches. The left side hatch for the commander could hold the P-40 anti-aircraft machine gun mount. New 71-TK-3 radios were installed in place of the old 71-TK-1 sets. All these changes are colledtively known as the Model 1936, although some sources disagree.

 

The air intake above the engine was changed in late 1936 or early 1937 (sources and photographic documentation disagree). The original design had a single vertically opening door. The two new designs were two vertically opening doors and two horizontall opening doors, the latter of which was kept in production.

 

In 1938, the biggest change in the T-28's production came with the L-10 gun instead of the old KT-28, creating the Model 1938. Otherwise, the tank was unchanged.

Since this doesn’t seem much different from the M1934, I’ve voted for this one to be a premium, where its AA MG and other minor improvements will make it a fairly attractive option for T-28 fans and low-tier players. I just don’t see a place for both the M1934 and M1936 in the main tree, given the similarities, but I would still love for both to be in the game, hence my vote for a premium M1936.

I might get to them in the near future. I'm actually rather surprised that nobody else has suggested them before (or if so, just not had it approved). I do know that there is some debate & controversy surround which guns were used exactly, as there were various claims about caliber and weapon name.

the T-28 isn't the most competitive tank at its br, and I think it would benefit a lot from the premium status + event grind craze

Not too much of a Soviet armour expert but believe there’s a few from memory: 

- 45mm armed prototype

- Long barrelled 76mm (F-34 I think)

- 85mm (F-30?)

- 95mm (F-39)

Vehicle was showcased on the Dev server stream, although it was called mod. 1938 there. However, all the exterior characteristics (the gun, steel bogies, hatches, etc) all match
