Harbin Z-19 - 'Black Whirlwind'

History & Background

The Harbin Z-19 - 'Black Whirlwind' is a Chinese Recon/Attack Helicopter developed by HMAC (Harbin Aircraft Manufacturing Corporation) for the Peoples Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) produced from 2011 onwards. Black Whirlwind was the nickname of Li Kui from the famous (one of 4 Great Classical Chinese Novels) literature the 'Water Margin' written in the 14th Century AD. Based on the Harbin Z-9W it has been modified to feature amongst other things, Forward Looking Infra-Red, armor plating, crash resistance seats, laser range-finder and a helmet mounted sight. It also features some noise reducing features such as a fenestron tail and exhaust port dampeners which are designed to reduce infrared signature. One minor weakpoint of this attack helicopter is that it is not equipped with any form of nose mounted machine gun or autocannon.

Power stems from 2 Zhuzou Aeroengine Factory WZ-8A turboshaft engines mounted high on a slim fuselage and rated to 848hp each with a top speed of approximatley 152 mph. It is also designed to work alongside the newer, heavier CAIC Z-10 in a form of 'hunter-killer' style mode with the Z-19 (the hunter) being of lighter, fixed wheel design. Later some Z-19 have been equipped with millimeter-wavelength electronically scanned array radar domes atop the four-bladed propellor similar in style to the AH-64 Apache. This would enable it to duck behind terrain whilst the rader scans the surroundings for targets and dangers.

In Warthunder the Z-19 would feature towards to the higher end of the Chinese Tech tree, it is somwhat comparable in offensive output with the recently introduced Italian Mangusta premium. With good offensive weapon options it should make for a competant strike platform however with a lack of machine gun or autocannon it might lack against other aerial threats.

Developed by the Chinese Aviation Industry Corporation, the Tiān Yàn-90  or 'Sky Swallow' 90 (pictured above) is the first missile developed specifically for military helicopters in engagements or dogfights. It features a 3kg warhead with a minimum range of 500m and a maximum of up to 8km. Weighing at 20kgs with a length just shy of 2 metres, it can accelerate up to mach 2 and is guided via infrared homing with a 20g tolerance. It has a rated kill probability of around 80% and despite marketing efforts remains solely used by the PLA.

With a maximum range of 4km it travels at a speed of 220 m/s with a weight of 11.2 kilograms. It could be said to be comparable with the BGM-71 TOW or the Euromissile HOT. The missile has gone through numerous improvements over the years and has or is still operated by over a dozen other countries.
