Description: Building on top of the Su-17M’s capabilities of attacking ground and naval targets under all weather and daytime conditions, the Su-17M2 was also intended to have a high degree of A2A combat capability.

Design changes incorporated within the Su-17M2 included:

  • Lengthening the fuselage noise by 200mm,
  • Reducing the diameter of the air intake duct to create a more spacious cockpit,
  • Increasing the fuel capacity by 200 liters,
  • Installing a fairing for the new DISS-7 Doppler speed/drift angle indicator under the air intake and ahead of the nose gear,
  • Installing an inert gas pressurization system in the fuselage fuel tanks,
  • Transferring the air-to-surface missiles radio-command line guidance transmitter from the centerbody to a pod carried on inner starboard wing pylon,
  • Fitting a new KN-23 navigational suite and SAU-22M automatic control system coupled to a ASP-17 & PBK-3-17 gun & bombing sights
  • Installing a Fon laser range finder in the air intake centerbody,
  • And making provisions for new weapons types.

Beyond the above changes, the Su-17M2 was otherwise identical to the Su-17M which preceded it.

The Su-17M2 was highly advanced for its day, and when fitted with the Kh-29L missile in 1977, could boast about being the world's first autonomous fighter-bomber armament complex consisting of laser target illumination and missiles with a semi-active laser guidance system. The Su-17M2 had a wide array of available weapons and it presented a much greater combat force to the Soviets than ever before with an increased ground attack weapons arsenal and competent air-to-air combat abilities.

Production of the Su-17M2 was carried out from 1975 to 1977, with a total of 268 examples produced.

USSR needs a better CAS plane, since the Su-7 has the terribly outdated S-24s.
Meanwhile, other nations have planes with AGM Bullpups.

Before this gets added, we would need the Su-9,Su-11 and the Su-15 added.
If we get those added, this can wait.

Su-9/11 don't fit the game at all , i would be more than fine if we jump from the Su-7BKL to the Su-15 .

+1 , i can't wait for 2021 where we'll see the entire Su-17 family !
