Description: While the preceding Su-7 was designed as a frontline fighter, the Soviet Air Force felt that a fighter-bomber role would be more apt for the aircraft, and so efforts to convert the type into a fighter-bomber were undertaken - an important role considering the emergence of Western fighter-bombers such as the F-100D and upcoming F-105 Thunderchief which had just begun testing by the late ‘50s.

Initially called the S-22, prototype Su-7Bs saw a significant increase in their empty weight (by 220 kg) due to internal reinforcement of the airframe and wings, so as a result had to make provisions for greater internal fuel capacity and a strengthened undercarriage to cope with the higher weight. In addition to integral structural changes, Su-7Bs were also fitted with upgraded avionics to better suit their mission profiles, and while the accuracy of their systems’ sights was not considered remarkable, it had a sufficient effectiveness for the time period.

As Su-7Bs were put into production, a continuous stream of modifications and improvements was made on the production line as new problems were discovered when the aircraft began to reach squadrons. Two of the major problems encountered were engine flameouts when firing unguided rockets, and ingesting foreign objects during taxi and landing due to the aircraft’s significant nose-down attitude on the ground. The first issue was addressed via the incorporation of the KS-1 system which virtually eliminated engine flameouts by reducing the engine’s RPM when the stick firing button was pressed, regardless of throttle position. The engine would automatically spool back up to its previous setting after a salvo had been fired, allowing for a full return to performance without the risk of engine flameout. Likewise, ingestion of foreign objects on the ground was eliminated by shortening the main landing gear of the aircraft by 113mm which presented the Su-7B in a slight nose-up attitude.

By 1960, the Su-7B began to enter service with fighter-bomber regiments of the Soviet Air Force, and was officially accepted into service on January 24th, 1961. A total of 431 aircraft were built.

+1, this would be an awesome jet to see in the game and a perfect attacker to add to the Soviet tree.

Do you have any information on the S-3K rocket? This is the first I've heard of them, and my quick google search is not yielding anything.

+1

As most of my books focus on aircraft design/development over ordnance, I couldn't find much about the S-3K in them other than this:

Until I can find something more definitive and credible, this questionable website will have to do: https://www.armedconflicts.com/1057-3-1050-1050-1040-1056-1057-160-t101901
