Strv 105 - King of Swedish Centurions

Hi dear tankists of War Thunder, today a suggestion to add the king of the Swedish Centurions, the Strv 105. Thanks for reading and voting!

History:

As the Swedish army wanted to get modern tanks in the 90's, they got 3 choices:

  1. Develop a whole new indigenous modern tank ;
  2. Buy a foreign modern tank (license or else) ;
  3. Or upgrade its current tanks fleet to modern standards.

The Strv 105 is the fruit of the last solution: having all Strv 102 and Strv 104 modified into a final upgrade. The Strv 105 was a comprehensive upgrade, similar to something like Magach 7 for M60. There were many improvements, such as new engine and gearbox, new suspension system, new power system, new hatch and new seat for the driver, a rotating tower floor for the charger (better than the one in Strv 101, which many thought worked worse than being completely without, as in Strv 102/104), an electrically operated reconnaissance hood for the wagon driver and the opportunity for him to even his aim with the shooter ("hunter-killer" function). In addition, an IR sight with monitors for the shooter and the wagon commander. An Strv 105 could most easily be distinguished from a Strv 104 on the IRV camera mounted on the fire tube.

Swedish also didn't want the English broadcasting radio, then the Swedish Ra 400, Ra 121 and Ra 130 radios were installed. This was the standard in both strv 81 and 101 until the change to Ra 421 becomes effective in 1962. A Swedish local telephone system was also introduced, which allowed everyone in the crew to talk to each other.

One Strv 105 prototype was built, and the project was cancelled after the decision to equip Swedish armored regiments with "Swedished" German Leopard 2A4 (Strv 121) was taken.

Characteristics:

Spoiler

Weight: 54 tons
Engine: 750 hp Teledyne Continental for 13.89 hp/ton
Max speed: 48 km/h
Length: 7.6m without the gun
Height: 3.01m
Width: 3.38m

Armor: 76/50/38 mm + ERA

Turret armor: 152/89/89 mm + ERA

Main armament: 105mm L7 canon

Ammunitions (they're all ingame, except last one):

  • HE shells ;
  • HESH shells ;
  • Slpprj m/66 shells (British L52A1) ;
  • Slpprj m/80 shells (comparable to DM23/M111 Hetz) ;
  • Slpprj m/90 shells ;

About the Slpprj m/90 shell:

Muzzle velocity: 1 455 m/s

Auxiliary armament:

  • 1* coaxial 7.62mm ksp m/39 ;
  • 12* smoke grenades launchers ;

Misc: Basically, the Strv 105 is comparable to the Sho't Kal Dalet, and has better sights (10x magnification) for the tank commander and thermals for the gunner. As said, there is a floor for the turret basket. The armor is identical to the Sho't (ERA and passive).

Strv 105 in War Thunder:

  • Would be a nice 8.3-8.7 tank with ERA armor
  • If premium, the Strv 104 would fit as a non-premium ERA tank ;
  • Would complete the 8.0-8.7 line-up ;
  • The last Swedish Centurion ;

This would be a really good addition to the game!  I agree that it would make for a killer premium.  And I wouldn't complain if it ended up in the regular tech tree.  +1.

I'm kind of split on this one. I want more tech tree tanks for Sweden, because it's needed. At the same time I know it would be very nice with some premium tanks. Still voted for tech tree variant though.

Thanks for your support!

If you have data about better ammos, I'm open.

It used slpprj m/90C, aka DM63 like the CM11. Its performance is worse than the CM11 though so it should go lower. It also has some other upgrades over the sho't that makes it not ideal at the same BR, like a suspension, engine and NV upgrades.

Well the suspension was made stronger and more stable I believe. The IR thingy? Not sure how to describe, it improved the passive NV for both the commander and gunner I believe. As for the engine, they replaced it along with the gearbox, the problem is we don't know with what. They also added a new, improved turret basket which didn't exist on it prior, since the 105 is based on a 104 and the 104 is based on a 102 and the 102 is based on a 81 which in turn didn't have a turret basket.

I mean, it would be nice to have some reliable sources about this. :salute:

None exists for it online and no one seems to know. To find that you'd have to go digging for it through the archives, speak to someone who worked on it or look at the actual physical vehicle.

As I don't speak Swedish it's kinda hard. And it would be even more as it is a prototype tank.

Sadly I don't see how I can add these datas to the OP. :(

I feel this is somewhat needed for the main tree as sweden lacks a casual medium tank at around 8.7. The 104 will likely not be higher than 8.3 as it is basically a shot cal dalet. The 105 has a more powerful engine and new suspension not to mention IR. It would also most likely get the 61 mm slpprj m/90C which with current calculations would be the most powerful 10,5 cm apfsds round in the game.

So you think this would be around 9.0 like the M60A3 TTS?

8.7 unless the engine somehow significantly improves the mobility. This is still a Centurion we're talking about here.

If the 105 was based of the 104 and the 104 was based of the 102 wouldn't that mean it would have the same armour thickness as the 101 as they improved it with the 102R upgrade. Or am I being an idiot getting miss information.

I'm quite sure that the Strv 102 "only" got the upgraded weapons to match the Strv 101, however they upgraded some Strv 102s to Strv 102R which meant, amongst other things, that they got the same armor as the Strv 101. And if I understand my sources correctly, that would mean that the Strv 105 would be based on the Strv 102R, and therefore have the upper hull armor of the Strv 101, i.e. 120 mm.
