Is there a tutorial or something to help new WW players get started?

So, I'm new to the World War mode, been wanting to try it a long while. Got bored with just running tanks and planes without any "purpose" so when a friend said WW was coming back I figured I'd give it a try. I had read up a bit on it a while ago, understood the basic concept, and last week when I went to play it seemed to be constantly offline. But today I got to try it, and wow... what a disappointment. I'm totally lost, and I'm not sure if I'm just stepping into battles at the wrong time, but man it was just not any fun.

First battle I joined was well in progress. Played for about 10 mins... I got a kill, then as we grouped up to attack mid point, time ran out we lost. Ok, fine start... but all down hill from there.

Second battle I joined, it ended about 8 seconds after I spawned in. Hrm, k...

Third battle I joined, it was a defense... I got shot and killed about 15 seconds after I joined, match ended about 5 seconds after that. Well, WTF?

Fourth battle I joined, I tried to figure out how long it had been going on so I wasn't joining something at the end. I left the "operation" that I was in, as there were no battle to start for 15mins or more... I took a while, looked over the whole list, saw a defense Fulda gap city that said "battle time 15s and was counting up, 15,16,17..." so I assume it had just started, so in I go.

I joined it. I moved about 10' and got shot and lose my barrel, backed up to repair... realized I was the only player in, was I the first? I see more players pop in... the Ruskies were all up in our spawn already... everyone is getting killed as they spawn in. The other team is already decapping the only cap point, this is all about 40 seconds after I joined the match. I'm still not even done repairing. Then someone drives up right to where I am still waiting for the last few seconds of the timer to repair... and *MATCH ENDS* We lose, I have been in that match for all of around 1min 15s.

Is this how World War is supposed to work? Seriously?

Am I missing something?

Yes you are missing something.

World War is not about equal battles - the commanders strive hard to make battles as UNEQUAL as possible to ensure they can win easily!!  Whoever was the commander on the other side of your experience did a good job ensuring a win for his team!

So before joining a battle you want to check whether you are joining for a massacre....   and if you are which side would you be on??!!

I will only play battles where there's a reasonable chance of a win - either I'm on the side with a numbers or position advantage, or at least things are reasonably equal - I don't bother with others!! (unless the session is over, and I only need a kill or 2 to get a star)

Things to look for:

1/ Number and type of vehicles on each side - higher numbers are better

2/ Presence of a/c or helicopters - higher numbers are better

3/ Will you be defending or attacking?  Defending is better.

4/ Type of battle - convoys are usually a disaster for the convoy if attacked by ground units, but can be OK if only attacked from air.  Air strikes against ground units are usually bad for the airforce.

Weigh these up - it's OK to defend with smaller numbers, it's OK to be attacking a defence if you have much larger numbers, aircraft and heli's can make a major difference if you are short of ground vehicles, and are skillfully handled.

Also check the wiki articles for more explanations of battles, mechanics, etc - https://wiki.warthunder.com/Category:World_War

Thanks for the reply and feedback. My biggest concern & misunderstanding is figuring out "when" I'm joining a match. In all but the first instance I joined a match that was already over... spawning in and getting shot in seconds was surprising the first time, annoying the second and just offensive in the third.

Each match looked (to my unpracticed eye,) to be somewhat balanced in the players & units, but (and I am not sure if there's any way to see it,) but I thought I was joining at or near the start... but obviously I was wrong. Is there a way you can you tell how long a particular battle has been going on?

Yeah there's a time counter somewhere at the top of the page...   but tbh sometimes it's not obvious that it is time the battle has been raging, or if it is just some random count up - even after 3 seasons I don't know - sometimes you think a battle is 5 or 10 minutes old and you end up the first one on the battlefield ....

There is a timer on the battle window where is also info about troops. (how many MBT's, planes etc.)

Timer will tell if battle has started or not and the time the battle has been going on.

See, that's what I assumed it was showing, but I must be looking at the wrong spot. Because in two of the instances the counter was still in seconds (and going up, like it had just started,) and I was getting killed within seconds of spawning. It made no sense at all.

First tip is: don't waste MBT spawns with uncompetitive tanks, it really hurts the team.
