  1. 1. Do you want to see W200/450×5.75 torpedoes for Italian boats with 450-mm torpedo launchers be added into the game?

W200/450×5.75 torpedoes

I would like to suggest W200/450x5.75 torpedoes for Italian torpedo boats with 450 mm torpedo launchers to be added into WT as 2 researched modifications.

First - "W200/450 torpedoes"

Second - "torpedo mode (W200/450)"

Currently most of Italian torpedo boats (including rank 2 boats) can use only low range 3 km torpedoes, but W200/450 will increase their effective range up to 8 km.

History:

   The origins of the Whitehead company date back to 1875 when the English engineer Robert Whitehead inaugurated the Torpedo Fabrik von Robert Whitehead in Rijeka, a city then of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the first torpedo production plant in the world.

  Afte the WWI the company went bankrupt following the crisis that hit the city. Following the Treaty of Rome, signed on January 27, 1924, which sanctioned the passage of the city of Rijeka to Italy, the factory was taken over by a group of Italian entrepreneurs led by the engineer Giuseppe Orlando who, with the name of Silurificio Whitehead di Fiume SA, resumed the production of torpedoes, receiving orders from the Regia Marina and several foreign naval forces.

  One of the main types of torpedoes made by Whitehead was W200/450, they were widely used on the Italian boats with 450-mm torpedo launchers.

  Before the WWII there was a plan to assign a special type of torpedo with a fixed range for each class of ships, but this standardisation programme was aborted and W200/450 torpedoes remained in service on different types of torpedo boats including MAS boats.

Specifications:

Diameter: 450 mm;
Length 5.75m;
Overall Mass 860kg;
Warhead Mass 200kg;
Explosive: TNT;
Torpedo Propulsion Wet Heater;
Mode 1: 40 knots - 4 km;

Mode 2: 30 knots - 8 km.

According to that document, at least Minisini torpedo launchers can grab W200/450 x 5,75.

And W200/450 as main torpedo, S.I. 200 (and also S.I. 170) - as reserve torpedos in the end of document.

But Si 200/450 x 5,36 shorter than 5,75, and need to watch on other boats

For example VAS 201 - small place in the tail of torpedo

But this modification - use W200/450 instead of S.I. 200 - not overpower for italian boats.

Warhead Mass  also 200kg, on W200/450 player can exchange speed and range, on S.I. 200 - only 3 km range.

On Navweaps, it's mentioned that in the later stage of the war, the warhead of italian torpedoes was changed from TNT to one of these:

  • 60% TNT, 20% cyclonite and 20% aluminum
  • ASN (70% ammonium nitrate, 10% dicyandiamide and 20% PETN)

  • German SW18 and SW36 explosives

I believe it would make them somewhat more effective, as the TNT equivalent of these mixtures is higher than 1.

Here's the page Torpedoes of Italy - NavWeaps
