newbie questions

I've been playing about 6 weeks.  I know I suck, but I'm slowly learning.

What's frustrating me are a few things.  I'm playing lv 5.7 British Air AB.

1) I've started noticing that I am not getting kill credit a lot of the time.  I realize there are issues when 2 are shooting the same target, however, I had one yesterday where I killed 6 bombers, by myself, got the message "aircraft destroyed", the battle log says I shot them down but...  0 kills.  Today another, 3-4 bombers, 0 kills, 0 assists.

2) It's getting very boring to have some players one shot me, not that I get sprayed and one hit gets me, just literally one shot. Pop. Once or twice cool, but certain players seem to have really godlike "aim" that seems too good to attribute to their skill or my suck.

3) Kill stealing.  Some guy went nuts on me yesterday.  Listen, I know it's a hot topic, but I fly bombers a lot.  If you don't shoot it down, completely down, not greyed out but DOWN it can still drop bombs, still kill planes and can put out fires and keep going. So if it didn't fly into a million pieces, I am taking a shot at it. If you are going in circles with a fighter around and around, I know I would want the assist, so I will give it. If I've dived 2km on some guy, I am taking the shot even if you are right behind him. (I'm not talking about shooting over shoulder or blasting clearly dead targets or cutting in front of people on the attack). It is a team match after all, and the bonus rewards come from winning not from 'your' kills.

4) What's with the jets in 5.7?  If I try putting just one jet in the lineup it takes me to 8.0 even if the rest of the planes are under 6.  How do they get into prop plane battles?

 

What am I wrong about here? Any suggestions? (please be kind, I'm an old guy probably 3x most of your ages)

1) Only Player aircraft counts. If you shot down AI, it doesn't count on end battle scoreboard.

2) Aim in cockpit, pilot. Usually one shot kill. 

3) What's the issue? Just ignore them.

If those bombers were IL-2s they were not player aircrafts.

You should also consider that if you're playing BR 5.7 battles you're facing a large number of very experienced players, and with 873 battles you're still quite new. If you find yourself always at the bottom of the scoreboard after the match, try playing lower tiers for a while, maybe play more than one nation (of course, if you're doing well, carry on!)

 

And if you're getting the "Aircraft Destroyed" message on a player aircraft, you should definitely get the kill. Next time it happens, try posting a screenshot of the scoreboard and post-battle screen and I'll have a look. As @anyuser noted, there are Il-2 bots in many of the battles that don't count as kills. You can recognize them by the lack of a player name.

Thanks! I finish top 5 usually and 1 or 2 often, BUT, that is certainly by virtue of my bombers (maybe they're overpowered on the scoring? - I have a couple of finishes with >9000 points solely on 1 bomber). I do ok on the fighters and I do notice myself getting a little better unless I run into an ace. I'm also trying the others, ~3.0 USA ~4.0 USSR ~2.0 Germany. I'm finding the 2-3 sort of easy most of the time and the rammers are annoying.

 

re bombers, as above, I'll pay much closer attention to exactly what I kill, I may have Ace egg on my face on that one.

I may have **Ace** egg on my face.  -  it will not let me edit it.

Hilarious that the board changes the word n o0 b to ace automatically.

Well, same for me British aircraft are completly useless at this point. The damage output from the hispanos is garbage and why even use anything else then the 109s? They do literally everything better. Britain gets good as soon as you get the Swift, up to the very end FGR2

I don't know the what the drama is implied by this answer and the previous one, I am enjoying Britain.  But there does at least seem to be a hole between the top props and the lowest jets. 5.7 (one 6.0 spit), and then 8.0 (maybe one 7.7?) for lowest jets. Where is lv 6 and 7?

It's more the usual drama of some of the elite dramaqueens, that only the 109 worth playing because it is THE "meta-plane" and you only would shoot yoursself in the foot using anything else.

Because you can't win your fights that good with other stuff...

 

 

Other nations got jets in that bracked, GB does not.

Not sure if some of the Meteors would need a downtier though.

Spitfires are pretty mediocre. I'd still suggest you fly them because they can teach you quite a bit about being the underdog. 

If you're a new player, take a break from higher tier and work on your other nations. You're not going to be competitive at higher tiers until you get some more experience, so don't rush just because you want a jet or something. The added benefit of flying all nations, all planes, is that you'll know exactly how to deal with any plane (or if you're fighting an f4 in a spitfire, how not to deal with it and run away). 

 

Check out long5hot on youtube. He has some good stuff for beginner pilots who want to focus on playing fighters. 

 

If you insist on playing GB, here's a short list of prop planes that are reasonably competitive; most other fighters are ok or mediocre:

Kills like that are supposed to show the "lucky" shot that kills the pilot, as a single bullet can do it.  After having played the game for years if someone seems to have an edge it's skill or they have a better ping.

What defines kill stealing varies from one person to the next; in the days before they took out friendly kills I'd have people on my team shoot me down because he ran out of ammo and I shot "his" plane down while he was reloading.  The only "stealing" I find objectionable is someone so intent to get the guy in front of me he's either in danger of colliding or pulling in front of me.  Not really stealing, just being a jerk.

In arcade you can be put with players 1BR higher or lower, so you can see 6.7 where there are some jets.  Up tiering is happening a lot lately probably to give people something to shoot at with jets as the higher tiers tend to be scarce of players.

Looks like you have some good responses already. Here are my 2 cents. Being so new i would highly recommend flying lower battlratings don't play just to unlock the next plane. As you learn and become more aware then consider moving up a little at a time. 2.3 - 4.0br  I also enjoy that area because so many of the iconic WW2 warbirds fall in there. Learning to make strong lineup of planes while not throwing yourself into higher level games because of putting the wrong plane in your lineup. You may even find after experience there are under battlerated planes that can be utilized well above their given battlerating while you are moving up. These are things you find out if you don't just get caught up in unlock fever. Welcome to Warthunder glad to have you. I'm glad someone is having luck with bombers. If a fighter so much as looks at my Halifax in a funny way from about 2 miles away, it's tail seems to falls off out of fright!

Take it out first and dive for speed from the start and bomb the closest base not in a direct path from the enemy spawn.  More often than not you'll make it, quite often your gunners may knock out the attacker you pick up and you'll get a second run plus an enemy kill.  Then go to your other planes. It'll help your score a ton also.

I tried the climb and patiently bomb, but you really waste the whole game if you end up blowing 5 mins climbing and get shot without dropping a single bomb and that, as you have seen, happens way too often. (exception: very cloudy maps, you can bomb all day with that from altitude)

Halifax are big targets. You need full crew experience to make them dangerous.

 

Need to use strategy with that plane to reach the base.

 

Their bomb load can knock out a base with one load.
