Screen freeze and it's aftermath

I've adjusted my settings so it doesn't happen as often but it still does from time to time.

My gripe is what happens after. I come back after the send report and close thing and I can't get back into the fight I was in.

And if it's a close fight I get a little upset. Could be the difference between a win or a lose.

My planes are all red and I have to sit there and watch a five minute countdown until I can join another fight.

Four things happen after a game crash for me.

1 I restart the game and am greeted with a crew lock

2 I restart the game and am offered the opportunity to rejoin the game and I've lost my original plane but can continue the game

3 I restart the game and am offered the opportunity to rejoin the game and I jump into the original plane near to where I was when the game crashed, but I've been charged with one death

4 I restart the game and am offered the opportunity to rejoin the game and I jump into the original plane near to where I was when the game crashed, but I am NOT charged with a death

Same exact thing just happened to me. Screen froze mid-battle and I was not allowed back into the battle (as was the case for all of my previous battle freezes) so this time makes no sense. I have never had a crew locked prior to today. This drives me crazy!! I normally see server freezes after a Gaijin update, major or minor, so they are far too common for my tastes. If an update is performed immediately after I open WT, I will get a freeze within the next 3 battles, guaranteed. I am ALWAYS charged with a death to whatever plane I was flying at the time, 100% of the time. The fact that this situation is different for different players makes me even madder. I just may give-up on this game.

I have experienced the same thing many times.  With me, I "Close and Restart" only to find that I've lost the plane through no fault of my own.  Very annoying.  I've searched the Internet for an answer and found that Gaijin has addressed the issue.  They said that they are aware of the problem and are "Working on it ..."  That was about a year ago.  But ... they did offer a temporary solution:  When War Thunder boots, don't hit "Play" but 1st scroll to the lowest resolution, use "Windowed" mode and then hit "Play" and enter the game.  When in the game, go to Options > Graphics and then re-enter your normal resolution and screen configuration - full-screen, windowed, or whatever.  I can say that for me, at least, it has solved the problem.

Thanks for the tip Magicfluteb. I know that if you leave it in graphics setting "minimum" it still freezes as I originally thought that my graphics settings were causing the problem, so I tried it, but I did not know about the "windowed" mode setting. You learn something new every day. Cheers!!

RoadToRuin, make sure that you set it to the "lowest resolution", first, before hitting "Play" not the minimum setting. I've found that reducing the graphics setting does nothing as far as helping with the freezing problem.  About every fourth or fifth game would freeze with me, and it started happening out of the blue about a little more than a year ago.  I hope this "solution" works for you as well as it does for me.

I have noticed my freezes all occur while I am actively maneuvering or engaged in 'mouse look' to check around the plane for enemy positions.  That is the only thing consistent with mine.  And I can't stop doing either one.

All the feels guys, my budget box is huffing hard on this update. Still looking for the magic settings combo that is playable without big frame drops/screen freeze and doesn't look like garbage :P

My feel is it's all the new lighting effects - especially when they interact with the new particle effects, really wish you could turn the lighting stuff off without turning on "old video card support."

Thanks magicfluteb, I did go down to minimum at first on my own, but I find the graphics quality unplayable, so I switched back to low. Your recommendation with the full window seems to be working okay regarding freezing and the graphics improved...but...I did notice something strange. When I play at low graphics within the full window, the aircraft dynamics of my opponents act strangely. I've noticed I'm only getting about half the hits on-target as normal (and half the results) even when I'm lined up directly behind an opponent. The aiming dot also changes size and position randomly. The aircraft I "lock-on" to seems to jump/skip/stutter ahead of me and that tiny bit of difference is enough for me to miss...a lot. Needless to say, my overall results have plummeted post update, I'm not entirely sure why. Has anyone else noticed this?

Had another server freeze tonight. Same as usual, mid-game, in the middle of a dogfight...ughhh!! Lost that plane, of course, and respawned right in front of a spawn camper. I wounded him but he got me. Played the remainder of the game and got a few kills but mid-dogfight the game just ended (no mission summary screen) and the next screen showed my results as "0" and that I needed to wait for results until the match ended...huh? Needless to say I am less than impressed with War Thunder lately. A flying game that freezes during dogfights isn't a whole lot of fun. I've tried many graphics settings and some of the advice from this posting seems to have helped, but it's literally hit and miss with results. Something has clearly changed gameplay-wise after this latest update. I'm getting tired of trying to figure out what it is.

Thanks again magicfluteb. I have done what Gaijin (and you) have recommended and it's either I risk the dreaded "freeze" playing smoothly at low resolution or I reduce the freeze likelihood by using the "windowed" option and deal with the opponents aircraft jumping around the screen. I wonder why they call it a server freeze if they are blaming it on the PC's video resolution? Oh well, choice is mine now, thanks for the replies. Cheers!!

  • 2 weeks later...

Some years ago, I had the frozen screen syndrome - after a LOT of trial and error, I figured that it was the graphics hardware (in my case, on the motherboard.).

So, I went out a bought a high-end graphics card, not the best, but a dedicated unit with as much memory as I could put on it.

VOILA!

This is the solution I would recommend - I've never had another problem.  Oh, and when there's an update, you MUST update your GPU drivers.
