  • This suggestion focuses on all 3 of the New Mexico class super dreadnoughts of the standard line of dreadnoughts, that being said in the case of USS Mississippi I will not cover her post war conversion into a missile battleship as that suggestion already exist and the reason she is included in here as well is due to in part of that the suggestion focuses on her in her modified state that she received following the 2nd world war
  • Since the suggestion on USS Mississippi on her post war configurations which generally focus on her configurations she had from 1948 to her 1952 modification, a link to the suggestion made by Z3r0_ will be included below the specification section
  • Links will also be provided for the preceding Pennsylvania class as well as the succeeding Tennessee class below the specification section

Background

The New Mexico class was a class of 3 dreadnought battleships which were the 3rd class of standard type battleships built for the USN in the late 1910's. Their design was similar to that of their predecessors, being the Pennsylvania class yet like the trend of succeeding classes that encompasses the changes of the standard battleships between classes the New Mexico class were near copies of the Pennsylvania however compared to them the New Mexico class had a different armament layout as they came with a improved layout which made them more usable along with along with the use of a clipper bow for better seakeeping plus in the case of New Mexico where she unlike her sisters was slightly different as she used an experimental turbo-electric propulsion system while the other ships used a traditional direct drive propulsion system and compared to the other standard battleships let alone all American dreadnoughts they were the only ones other than the later Colorado class to break the trend of having 2 ships for each dreadnought class as had every preceding American dreadnought class and in the 1930's they would become more unique in this sense as in the 1930's the class received their modernization their profiles were changed as they had received a new bridge superstructure that lacked any form of a mast near the bridge though another mast was present still amid ship it was neither that of the tripod mast type nor the cage lattice which were removed in the modernization.

                                                                              Image.png

Like the previous class the New Mexico class was armed with 12 14-inch/50 (356mm) guns in 4 turrets with each having 3 guns per turret, the ships were armed with 14 5-inch/51 (127mm) guns in individual casemates however the ships were originally intended to use 22 of these guns however as the ships were under construction it was realized that the lower deck mounts were not viable in rough sea condones and as such the openings for the casemates on the lower decks were covered up during construction though with the exception of USS Mississippi who according to sources completed first and ended up initially receiving all 22 guns though this was very quickly reduced to 14 guns, the ships also came with a armament of 4 3-inch/50 guns for their anti aircraft armament and to top it off the ships were armed with 2 underwater torpedo tubes, however in the 1930's the ships had were modernized and the modernization in early 1930's saw the them receive new 14-inch Mk 7 guns, the secondary battery reduced to 12 guns, the anti aircraft battery being improved with 8 5-inch/25 (127mm) guns, and the torpedo tubes were removed and in 1941 before the US joined the 2nd world war they received one last modification which saw another 2 secondary guns removed along with the return of the 3-inch guns and the ships receiving 8 to 10 12.7mm machine guns and during the second world war the ships which all were not present for Pearl Harbor they would all see action during the war though all 3 would spend most of the war in the pacific and throughout the war they would receive various changes in armament as they continued to see more 20mm and 40mm guns installed as well as Idaho being the only one that by the end of the war had received the 127mm/38 guns however interestingly unlike a number of US standard battleships which received these guns Idaho came with 10 guns in the single mounts and only New Mexico by the end of the war had any remaining 127mm/51 guns remaining and following the war Mississippi would end up becoming a unique testbed would end up testing the twin 6-inch gun turret that the later Worcester class light cruisers used as well as later being equipped with guided missiles which saw her in service until the early 1950's however since this suggestion focuses on their configurations spending from the 1910's to 1945 that configuration will not be covered here however a suggestion already exist for her in that configuration and has already been pass for consideration however the link to it is provided below the specification section.

USS New Mexico was laid down on October 14th, 1915, she was to originally be named California however while under construction her name was changed to New Mexico, she was launched on April 13th, 1917, and was commissioned on May 20th, 1918, and upon commissioning she would join the Atlantic Fleet and even though she missed out on the 1st world war she ended up escorting the passenger ship George Washington as she carried President Woodrow Wilson to France for the Versailles Peace Conference and following this she continued to operate as apart of the Atlantic Fleet until 1919 where she would find herself based in California and during this time took part in exercises with both pacific and Atlantic fleets and during this time she was also used for the early development of PID controllers and in 1937 she was then moved to Pearl Harbor. With the clouds of war looming the New Mexico class would be sent back to join the Atlantic Fleet where they took part in neutrality patrols which would end up being their saving grace as this resulted in all 3 ships not being present for Pearl Harbor and following the attack they were sent back to the Panama Canal to return to the pacific and while sailing their New Mexico accidentally ended up ramming and sinking a friendly freighter.

                                                                              Image.png

Once in the pacific and after a overhaul at Puget Sound she helped to first escort convoys to Fiji before taking part in her fist operation which was apart of the Aleutian Island campaign which saw her take provide shore bombardment and following this she would took part in the Gilbert Island campaigns that not only saw her provide shore bombardment but take part in the rare role for standard battleships, that being in that she ended up providing carrier escort and as the war went on she continued to provide shore bombardment and taking part in escorting convoys as well as continuing her role in carrier escort and in 1945 she took her first bit of damage when a kamikaze hit her bridge which killed 30 including her captain and the the British representative to General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, Lieutenant General Herbert Lumsden who was the highest ranking British army officer fatality to occur during the entire war and additionally the the commander of the British Pacific Fleet,  Bruce Fraser ended up narrowly escaping death while on her bridge though his secretary was not so lucky and following this she continued her shore bombardment before returning to Pearl Harbor and she would be hit by 2 more kamikazes and by the end of the war she was present to witness the official signing of the surrender of Japan and by 1946 she was decommissioned and removed from the naval register however her journey to her final destination would be an incident of it's own as while undertow she had to have her lines cut due to the weather and she would later be found by 2 coast guard ships following which she was brought under tow again however it wouldn't be the end of it as she was to be scrapped as a incident occurred which went so far in resistance being made by the city of Newark in scrapping her which saw 2 fire boats sent out to stop her and the ships towing her and a formation of tug boats were deployed to make sure she made it and it went so far as that the secretary of the US Navy to intervene and deal with negations which resulted in New Mexico along with her sister Idaho and USS Wyoming to be scrapped in Newark however no permanent facilities would be made to scrap them and in exchange they had 9 months to scrap all 3 ships and if this was not completed by the deadline they would be fined $1,000 every day and she was finally scrapped in 1948.

Mississippi

Spoiler

                                                                              Image.png

USS Mississippi was laid down on April 5th, 1915, she was launched on January 25th, 1917, and was commissioned on December 18th that year, due to the fact she was the first ship of the class to commission she ended up commissioning with the originally intended 22 gun secondary battery though it was soon realized that the lower hull mounted guns were prone to taking on water in anything but a flat calm condition and soon after commissioning she had her secondary battery reduced in 1918 and she would spend her time as apart of the Atlantic Fleet however by the early 1920's she found herself assigned to the pacific fleet with her sinking the force USS Iowa pre dreadnought with her secondary battery and main battery in 1923 and comminuted this trend up until the beginning of the 1930's when she returned to the US East coast where she returned to Norfolk for her major modernization and following this she resumed her duties in the pacific though during winter training cruises she would find herself in the Caribbean and by 1941 like her sister Mississippi returned to the Atlantic Fleet for neutrality patrols as the war in Europe however once the attack on Pearl Harbor had occurred and America official joined the war she was called back to the Pacific and after making it to San Francisco she proceed with training and escorted convoys along the US west coast for the first 7 months before receiving a refit that saw her anti aircraft armament increased as it would over the course of the war, her first duty once heading towards the front lines took place when she escorted troop convoys to Fiji before heading north where she stopped in Hawaii before heading for the Aleutian islands as apart of the campaign to retake the islands where she provided shore bombardment.

                                                                              Image.png

Following the Aleutians Mississippi would find herself finding herself taking part in mostly shore bombardment for the rest of the war thought his would be interrupted with the  Battle of Surigao Strait where she was the only US battleship that was not present for Pearl Harbor and during which saw her fire her guns in the last battleship engagement in history and following which she took part in more shore bombardment and by the end of the war found herself present in Japan for the official end of the war where she like New Mexico was present for the signing of the official surrender.

                                                                              Image.png

Unlike any other standard battleship Mississippi would have a different fate following the Second World War and would end up being the last standard battleship to leave service as following the war she was used as a gunnery training ship as well as being a sort of test bed vessel as she would be modified with at first all but 1 main gun turret removed with a twin 6-inch quick firing gun turret which was to be used on the Worcester class equipped on her for testing though this conversion was done from 1945 to 1948 and other proposals were made as to arm her with additionally more 5-inch/54 guns as she did receive in her conversion as well as a 8-inch gun turret for that of the Des Moines class and in the 1950's she also was the only standard battleship to receive guided missiles as she received the RIM-2 terrier missile system and it would be in 1952 when she was finally taken out of service, decommissioned, and scrapped making her the last standard battleship to leave service.

Idaho

Spoiler

                                                                              Image.png

USS Idaho was laid down on January 20th, 1915, she was launched on June 30th, 1917, and was commissioned on March 24th, 1919, her very early career saw her as apart of the Atlantic Fleet at first though she would be sent over to the pacific in short order in the same year of entering service and would spend her time in the pacific fleet conducting exercises as well as visits to friendly ports with the 1920's continuing this though she would at times take part in exercises in the Caribbean however would spend nearly the entire interwar period in the pacific until 1941 when she was sent along with her sisters back to the Atlantic for neutrality patrols due to the war in Europe which as stated previously was probably their saving grace as the enter class was not present for the attack on Pearl Harbor leaving them along with USS Colorado though the latter was undergoing overhaul at the time as the only operation standard battleship of the USN and soon after all 3 ships were recalled to the Pacific and once she had reached the US West coast she conducted training off the Californian coast before receiving a refit which saw her anti aircraft battery was greatly strengthened by the end of the year with her quick seeing her remaining secondary battery removed and in return her anti aircraft gun jumped to 40 40mm guns and 24 20mm guns and following this she was sent to assist in the Aleutian island campaign.

                                                                              Image.png

Following the end of the Aleutian island campaign Idaho found herself in the typical role that most standard battleships of the USN found themselves in during the war where they mostly provided shore bombardment though during the Battle of the Philippine Sea she remained with the invasion fleet in order to protect the landing forces and in 1944 she saw her 5-inch AA guns replaced with 10 5-inch/38 dual purpose guns which were far superior weapons to the 25 caliber ones she had previously and interestingly she was the only ship of her class during the war to receive these though it must be said that Mississippi post war in her conversion did receive these guns in twin mounts. By the end of the war like her sisters she was present to witness the official signing of the surrender of Japan which brought an end to the Second World War and in 1946 she was decommissioned before being scrapped in 1947.

I can see at least two of these being added in battleship configuration.  What I'm thinking is one vessel could be in either 1918 or 1922-refit configuration, and a second in mid-30s configuration.  For the third, I'd either go with a 1944-1945-refit vessel (if the vessel in question isn't USS Mississippi), or if it is USS Mississippi then the training ship conversion is also on the table.  I don't know if Gaijin will add multiple versions of the exact same hull to the game (though they may end up having to do so in some cases, the Soviets coming to mind, since they didn't finish any new battleships after the Ganguts and only had refitted Ganguts in use during World War II).

IMHO, were due for a late refit standard. Seeing as GJN first went with 12" Mark 7> 14"/45cal > 12" Mark 8. Seems to reason the next upgrade would be 14"/50cal before we dive into 16". That leaves NewMex and Tenn classes.

Almost positive it will come next.

I think you are right. It will be NM, Tenn, and probably going into 16" with the Colorado class, but honestly seeing as how the British have gotten 15" ships already the jump to 16" isn't far fetched doing it sooner than later. Anywho I am way too excited to see these classes come into the game. (I just hope we get the option for the USS Idaho in a late refit as it is my favorite super dreadnought of WW2... California and Colorado come right after that funny enough. Such good looking classes of ships.)
