Hi guys.

Today i want to suggest giving the T-80U currently ingame the option to get the Drozd-2 APS as an optional modification.

The reason for giving the tank this uprade is that it was something that was installed on a few T-80U tanks throughout it's service life. And it was recently used in the major Zapad-2021 military exercise.

The way Drozd-2 works is it uses it's radar module with control units and panels to detect incoming rounds where it fires it's own projectile after the incoming shell where it brings a sortoff shotgun blast effect to take out or damage the incoming shell.

Below you can find spoilers that showcase what rounds the Drozd-2 may or may not be able to intercept. Shoutout to @Zombificus that sourced the T-62D for bringing this info. All the shell spoilers are quotes from his T-62D suggestion.

:)

BP-540 HEAT Shell (Object 268 -- it would have to travel quite a long way to lose 70 m/s and be slow enough for Drozd)

DM502 HESH Shell (Leopard 1s (1, A1A1, C2A1 & 1A5), M48A2 GA2, Super M48, RadKfw 90 -- 730-732 m/s is slow enough that ranged shots should be counterable)

G-530 AC Shell (KV-2 -- it's slow enough, but I don't remember if anti-concrete shells act like HE and can be prematurely detonated by impacts)

Kh-23M AGM (Yak-38 & 38M -- a range of speeds is given online, from 599 m/s to 751 m/s, so I don't know if their speed modeled in game is low enough for Drozd to stop them)

L1 HESH (FV4005 -- a muzzle velocity of 712 m/s means that any ranged shot should be slow enough for Drozd to stop, but brawling against the FV4005 would still be suicide)

L35 HESH (Strv 103C, Centurion Mk.10, Vickers MBT -- 730 m/s is slow enough that at range Drozd could stop it)

M393A2 / M156 HESH Shell (Magach 3, Merkava (Mk.1 & Mk.2B), M1 Abrams (M1, XM1 GM, XM1 Chrysler, IPM1), M60s (base, A1 AOS, A1 Ariete, A1 RISE P, A3 TTS), STB-1 -- equivalent to DM502 & L35)

M409A1 HEAT Shell (KPz-70, MBT-70, XM-803 -- their muzzle velocity with this round is 754 m/s, so it would have to travel far enough to slow to 700 m/s before Drozd could intercept it)

OF-540 HE Shell (Object 268 -- muzzle velocity of 750 m/s means only a long range shot would have slowed enough for Drozd to intercept)

slspgr m/61 HESH / Type 75 (Strv 103-0, Strv 103C, Type 74s (base & G) -- 760 m/s would only be slow enough at very long ranges)

Type 75 HE Shell (Type 75 -- its 720 m/s muzzle velocity is too fast for Drozd, but at range it should have slowed enough for it to stop)

Unstoppable:

Spoiler

152mm HEAT-FS (Object 120 -- more than 300 m/s too fast)

3BK-10 HEAT Shell (SU-122-54)

CRV7 M247 HEAT (AH Mk.1, Jaguar GR.1 -- its 990 m/s flight speed is too fast for Drozd)

L1TK HESH Shell (Conway, Conqueror -- 792 m/s is too fast to slow down below 700 m/s at any probable range)

MIM146 ADATS (ADATS -- with a flight speed of 1200 m/s, it's far too fast for Drozd to intercept)

OF-46 HE Shell (SU-100Y)

OF-471 HE Shell (IS-2, IS-2 1944, IS-3, IS-4M, IS-6, ISU-122, ISU-122S, KV-122, SU-122P, SU-122-54, T-10M)

OF-482M HE Shell (IS-7, Object 279)

TBA ECC / TBA Multi-Dart 100 AB (Jaguar A -- slightly too fast for Drozd at 760 m/s)

Zuni Mk 32 (A-4B, AV-8s (A & C), F-4 Phantom IIs (C, E & EJ), F-1, F-104S, T-2 -- 732 m/s flight speed is slightly too fast for Drozd)

In War Thunder. I think the T-80U with Drozd-2 would fit perfectly in the game for a future update focusing on Hard Kill Active Protection Systems. And i also think this could potentially shift the meta at high to top tier in a better way that diversify the gameplay more.

If we see this with the Trophy system and other hard-kill APS like you said before, it would be a good add. Probably a separate vehicle though. Nevertheless +1

I think it's too early for stuff like this for now. Maybe somewhere down the line but too early for me to vote yes

how is that too early ? there is flying anti tank munition everywhere at top tier :dntknw: and once it come to the game it won't be a smooth change , so if that happen next patch or next year i don't see what should be different ?

thats with the arena aps right?

Yeah. I did some (not enough) research on this vehicle with what limited time I had. The APS is pretty cool, from what I understand, there's a single charge behind all of those ERA plates. That huge thing on top is the radar that scans for projectiles, once one is noticed, the charge is fired upwards (like a grenade) and starts steering towards any projectiles and sets them off from 10-30 meters away from the vehicle.

Well, thats the logical way it would work, I haven't yet found an explanation anywhere on how it actually launches the projectiles (and from where).

AFAIK, the sole (formerly, RIP) existing Drozd testbed was an otherwise vanilla Soviet T-80U, which means if it were to be added it would have no thermals and an old stabilizer. If we could have every single minor variant of the T-80U in game I'd happily take all of them, including this one, but if Gaijin decides that we can only have 1 or 2 more (if at all) between the T-80U and the T-80BVM I'd personally prefer to have one with HD thermals and a quick reaction time like the T-80UE-1 rather than a single gimmick variant like this one.

As far as T-80Us with APSs are concerned, the UM1 or the 219M would be much more viable additions than the Drozd testbed I think.

Here are the last images of the vehicle from the events in Ukraine.

My best guess of what happened was the vehicle was parked and not operational when it got hit by what i guess is Artillery.

Also there have been some confusion of rather this is the T-80UM2. To my knowledge ( correct me if im wrong ) This is a regular T-80U upraded to carry the Drozd-2 APS. While the T-80UM2 comes from the Object 640 Black Eagle Project which was mostly active in the Late 1990's early 2000's. But if there is someone who has a source feel free to share it.

The vehicle is apparently parked, so I guess the crew wasn't inside. As you write, so it was probably artillery.
