Does it really deserve 9.7? The missile it gets is pretty much worse than every other fire and forget AA missile out there due to the incredibly poor speed and the gun lacks any meaningful AT options unlike the SPAA before it. Only thing it really has for me seems to just be slightly better depression but since it has no powerful AP rounds it can only really defend itself against light vehicles. Is there something I'm simply not seeing with this vehicle that lets it sit on 9.7 or is it just Gaijin balancing again?

Just bought it, and crewed it...first Battle, couldn't hit a barn...even at 1 km away! And missiles seems useless vs jets..

I consider myself fairly adequate with PGZ09, is it really worth using PGZ04A over PGZ09?

I have the PGZ04A since it was released. Use the missiles on Helicopters (once you get a lock it is a 98% kill chance). Against jets, only shoot with the cannon, when they are under 2.5 km (you have an optical tracking device, so the target will not get a warning).

In general you have a short range Spaa with medium range missiles against helicopters (Although it is possible to kill distracted jets with missiles, but that's more a lucky shot). It is not the best Spaa on its rank but it can get the job done.

In my eyes it's an upgrade to the 09, but nothing more. (Also a downgrade against tanks)

if it's HN-6 missiles could lock on smth, then yeah... You're right.

 

I don't really expect anything more than you say or even much less... But it doesn't really lock on anything and a hovering Heli mid of map under 2-3 km

Because pgz04 is not on the battlefield alone, it is generally equipped with a Doppler radar vehicle to provide data link.

 

I think the next AA of Chinese TT will be hq7 air defense missile in service in 1988, subgrade hq-7a, sea based ha-7b and export model fm-80. It was built by PLA after it obtained the French sea rattlesnake missile in 1979. It has a range of 12km, equipped with pulse Doppler radar, infrared, radar and electro-visual composite guidance, and has the ability to intercept cruise missiles.

Yes, the PGZ04A missiles are ****, but they are incredible against helicopters. I've never had a single missile miss a helicopter even as it pumps out flares and I fire from my maximum range. Using the PGZ04A's missiles against any jet going fast is a waste unfortunately.

Thing is, the cannons on this thing doesnt seem good at all either, compared to PGZ09, and the radar seems buggy as hell...I have trouble locking on planes. Seems the fly too fast for the radar to get a lock...maybe thats how its supposed to be, I dont know. This thing is my highest SPAA in all nations, so not sure how it compares to other ones, but to me 9.7 seems too high BR for this tbh. Those few battles I've had with helis in, they have been deleted by flarakpz or something long before I even see anything on my own radar...I don't have a good relationship with this vehicle at all

You are right, the PGZ09 is slightly overtiered, and China in general has the second worst top tier SPAA compared to any other nation, besides Japan. IR missile SPAA's in general seem to suffer, because you're shooting 20g missiles from the ground at jet players who are already used to dodging sidewinders and even 30g missiles fired every 30 seconds from >2km in air RB. Anyone who is remotely paying attention can easily dodge IR missiles.

PGZ09 has thermals, guess thats why its 8.3. I do like it, once you hit a plane it goes down, and its nice to shred light tanks end-game as well. 

Would rather have strapped some missiles to it and upped its BR in exchange for PGZ04A. 

 

Problem for me though, seems to be trouble getting radar lock consistently using SPAA. However, that also applies when I use Shilka, Gepard and M163 as well so won't blame Gaijin for just screwing the Chinese SPAAs for that one.
