Radar/Sparrows for idiots?

Cant figure out how to use the AIM7Es. Using an F4E right now which I know doesnt have the best radar, but I keep having instances like being 5-9 miles away from an enemy, engage the locking mechanic on the radar, and I either cant get a lock or I do get a lock and the missile wont even fire. Other tines the missile fires and travels like half a mile before exploding mid air.

 

Also not really aware how the different radar modes work and how I should be using them. If someone can explain in idiot terms or direct me to a guide that is more easily understandable I would be very thankful

With the issue of not getting a lock, I would assume that is because the poor performance of the F4E's radar.

To use sparrows make sure they are selected first of all, and have a radar lock on the enemy. Then press the keybind that turns on the missile lock, your target should have 2 green circles around them. This shows that the target is locked, but its not a solid lock and the missile wont launch. Only once both circles turn red around the enemy will your missile be able to fire. You must maintain the radar lock the entire time until the missile hits its target.

The missile firing and then exploding after half a mile im not sure about, it could be that the missile lost its lock and just exploded.

Aim7s in the F4E do not have that much range. Usually, you want to fire at 4km or less. 

As of the radar, it's quite bad but usually ok if you fly low and lock targets that are above the horizon.
