cam64viper 8 Report post Posted December 24, 2022 Alright, new-ish to top tier. I've got the Stryker (Tech tree version) and ground out the first set of darts, so the way top tier plays isn't unfamiliar but definitely still new. I'm playing US 9.3 with the XM-803 (only have parts so far), Freebrams premium, and Sargeant York. XM-803 has talisman and backups to last for the rest of the day, trying to unlock the MBT-70 to add to the lineup. Problem I'm facing currently is actually getting past the stock HEAT shells that the 803 has, they don't seem to harm anything that isn't an IFV. After stock grind shenanigans, how can I play better with these speedy tanks? Armor seems to serve no purpose against my current enemies, maybe these tanks are just paper-thin and I'm not aware of that?
Tharidor 19 Report post Posted January 16, 2023 Personally I struggle with HEATFS in top tier. I dread the moments when I unlock a new tank around 10.0-11.0 BR because of this reason alone. I would recommend going for the dart rounds ASAP, and some tanks will allow you to research darts on the tier 1 modification line. Now when it comes to the use of darts, I suggest aiming for the hull, since that will result in a one-shot the majority of times (9/10 times it results in a one-shot for me at least) and it does take some practice to know where exactly to hit an enemy tank in order to get that result. Practice makes perfect! I will also recommend using hull down positions on maps that allow it, because you're much safer in hull down than you are with your hull exposed. Also, a small tip that you might already be aware of, but adjust your ammo storage before you go into battle, because some tanks allow you to reduce the ammo count stored in the tank to such a point that certain ammo storages are completely empty, and if it's possible on the XM-803, then you'll have a much better chance surviving when hull down, since you remove the chance of being ammo racked from the ammo in the turret. (The ammo in the XM-803's turret is the ammo that is depleted first, so it should work) Generally speaking, I would opt to use your speed to drive for good hull down positions on maps, and once there, utilize your LRF to pick off players that drive along common routes. XM-803 was the first thing I've got a talisman and an free ace crew on it also, but their APFSDS are slow and without a good penetration. MBT-70 is kinda the same thing. There's a hidden reason (I believe) HEAT-FS on those tanks (any tank, actually) are the stock ammo: You gotta know where to shoot. Most (if not all) vehicles you will face have a decent chemical protection on their armor, so you gotta find out where exactly to shoot them at, for example, at 9.3 you will face 10.3 USSR vehicles, which are really strong against HEAT-FS on some places and ridiculously weak on others (like hitting fuel tanks and ammo racks). The best way to find out is to study your enemy using "protection analysis" on the main screen. Top tier also is all about positioning and patience. Don't try to rush into things and try to gain map knowledge. Aiming precision is also a factor, but the positioning is essencial. Don't rush too far from your team, keep behind the line (specially if you don't have a spaded vehicle). I'm kinda against Gaijin policy of providing top-tier vehicles for newcomers. I seriously don't recommend that at all if you are new to the game. Is your first tech tree? - Grab some 4.7 ~6.0 good premium vehicle and learn your way into the game first. If you are already familiar to the game mechanics and have some tech tree already researched, then fine, go get some premium top tier vehicle. Otherwise you'll be running around like a headless chicken without a clue about what to do, since the pace of top tier matches are quite high and require a high level of battle awareness. That being said, now you gotta deal with what you have: Just research the MBT-70 and move on to the next. Things start getting good when you get the M1A1 and IPM1. Adding a talisman on the M1A1-AIM also might be a good idea. Ah yes, about armor being paper: Ever heard of that philosophy? - Don't get shot. It's a good philosophy, works great on top tier. So, basically, literally, don't get shot. Edited January 16, 2023 by BroccoliHotSauce
