Chinese Coastal Tree

Republic of China Navy (ROCN) Logo.svg People's Liberation Army Navy Jack and Ensign

Hey wait, a Chinese Navy tree suggestion already exists!

Yeah, but it's for the older combined naval forces tree layout, and is a little limited in vehicle selection. This tree is more fleshed out IMO.

Some filler history for the Chinese Navy(ies)

Spoiler

By the 20th century, the Chinese Navy was in tatters, with the Sino-French and Sino-Japanese Wars having destroyed most of its fleets. Such matters weren't helped when the ruling Qing Dynasty was overthrown in the Xinhai Revolution in 1911, which led to some ships currently under construction to be cancelled. The new Republican government took what remained of the navy, and actually ordered new relatively modern ships from the West, but they too were cancelled when the Great War broke out. It was only in the Interwar era that new large ships were acquired, some ironically with Japanese assistance, which were then destroyed in the Second Sino-Japanese War. Post-war, the navy essentially had to start anew, and a fair number of ships were given to rebuild its navy from the Allies and as reparations, and its first engagement would be in the Chinese Civil War, with the navy split between the Communists and Nationalists. When the Nationalists retreated to Taiwan after the loss of the mainland, it was up to their respective naval forces to wrest supremacy in the Taiwan Strait, but whatever planned landings were ended with the outbreak of the Korean War. But as the Korean War ended, both sides started a naval build up, sponsored by the USSR and USA, with the PLAN receiving old Soviet vessels and the plans to produce their own, while the ROCN were given old American destroyers, frigates, and coastal vessels. The two sides would then intermittently fight throughout the Cold War, but due to continued US intervention neither side could achieve their goals. Elsewhere, the PLAN has fought in the South China Sea, most notably in the Paracel Islands and Johnson South Reef, fighting both the former Republic of Vietnam Navy and Vietnam People's Navy.

Bonus Manchukuo naval history:

Spoiler

1920px-War_Ensign_of_Manchukuo.svg.png

In 1931, after the Mukden Incident and Japanese invasion of Northeast China, the puppet state of Manchukuo was established. The Jiang Shang Fleet, the naval arm of the Manchukuo state, was established from the remains of the Northeast Defence Fleet, which was already battered after its defeat during the Sino-Soviet War of 1929. Japanese advisors and officers were sent to help reorganize the fleet and a few obsolete ships were transferred and new river gunboats built. It mainly operated in the Songhua and Wusuli Rivers with a few of its largest vessels operating from Dalian in the Bohai Sea. In 1938 it was subordinated under the Kwantung Army and renamed the Jiang Shang Army. In 1945 the Soviet Union formally declared war on Japan and invaded Manchukuo, quickly defeating the Kwantung and Jiang Shang armies. The fleet fought the Amur River Flotilla on the Songhua River, but before long the crews rebelled and murdered the Japanese officers. The remnants of the fleet retreated to Harbin where it declared loyalty to the Republic of China, albeit that didn't stop the Soviet Army from taking them prisoner and capturing the ships.

The tree itself:

gQIg9nI.png

Coastal BRs are really weird and compressed, so my judgement may not be the best for the BRs. Names are in Pinyin, PLAN ships have it as one word, ROCN ships separate each character.

Unlike my exercise for a Baltic States Coastal Tree, most vessels here are interwar-cold war to keep with the current time period of coastal naval.

I only have solid academic sources on interwar-just post war vessels, so some of the specifications may be wrong.

The "event" vehicles are ones I've removed from the actual tree, but I might want to re-add later

Tree Overview:
Line 1: "Fast Attack Craft"

Generally torpedo boats, with the odd fast MGB and Missile Boat (BRs meant for non-functional missiles). Avoided dedicated missile boats like the Type 024 or Hai Ou as their gun armament is rather weak.

Line 2: Gunboats

All sorts of small gunboats, builds up to corvettes and large gunboats. I don't know what's the line that a vehicle is designated a "frigate/gunboat" and gets a DD spawn, but I assume it's size based, a length of >70m?

Line 3: Large Vessels
Starts with interwar gunboats, finishes with frigates. One frigate has SAMs, might as well have them be usable to make things interesting (Side note: Yes, frigates are considered blue-water vessels, but Gaijin has chosen to implement them into coastal trees... unless they are German). Grouped Japanese Escort Ships here too. There's a lot of frigate-sized options for Rank IV and V.

Line 4-5: Premium and Squadron

A few, more or less copy-paste vessels (Fang 1, No.158, Kunming), export, and Manchukuo ships, and some interesting ships that couldn't fit in the tree.

Zanju13 for the epic TT maker

Zero_Seeker and hypilot for their help

UPT 2023-01-14: Added Fan Gong and Xue Chi, low rank ROCN MTBs, adjusted Ning Hai BR. TT is getting far too long to screenshot.

UPT 2023-01-16: Added Luzhou and the Type 057K, mid-rank sub-chaser and minesweeper, moved Ning Hai and Lin An to rank 3, moved Lin An to TT, adjusted Jiefang BR, added Xian Ning as a preliminary.

UPT 2023-01-17: Added Ou Jiang, mid-rank sub-chaser, removed Type 057K.

UPT 2023-01-18: Added Min Quan and Jiujiang, low-rank gunboat and high-rank frigate, foldered a few ships, adjusted Tai Yuan (DE-27) and Zhongdong BR.

UPT 2023-01-19: Added Lianjiang, high-rank FAC.

UPT 2023-01-22: Added Shun Tian and Ding Bian, high-rank Manchukuo gunboats, one is a squadron vehicle, adjusted Yongjia BR.

UPT 2023-01-27: Added Nanchang, squadron gunboat, in case adding Manchukuo ships is not viable.

UPT 2023-02-10: Added An Ping and NNS Sagbama, premium reserve MTB and patrol boat, moved 414 to TT, adjusted BNS Salem BR.

UPT 2023-05-15: Added Min Jiang (stats just taken from the suggestion for it), removed Zhang Jiang and Lin'An as I feel they are redundant.

Moved a bunch of vehicles:

Spoiler

PB-60 BR -> 1.3

Tai Yuan -> Rank 2, BR -> 2.0

Min Quan -> Rank 3

Ning Hai -> Rank 2

Luzhou -> Rank 2 premium

Tai Ping and Nanchang -> swapped

Xian Ning (PCE-79) -> Rank 2 premium, BR -> 2.3 (realized I had overtiered the thing lol)

UPT 2023-05-29: Added Hai Long and Da Dong, Manchukuo rank 1 gunboats, moved Ding Bian to rank 4 and lowered BR to 3.7.

I’ve actually made a list of most of the ships ROC operated (1911 onwards) and working on most of what the PLAN operated. It mostly comes from the Chinese naval museum website that’s now gone.

I made it on my notes so formatting is bad

Also the list is not comprehensive. I mainly added ships that could work on game or were interesting.

Missing late Qing dynasty ships and a whole mess of small Japanese ships.

I’ve actually made a list of most of the ships ROC operated (1911 onwards) and working on most of what the PLAN operated. It mostly comes from the Chinese naval museum website that’s now gone.

I made it on my notes so formatting is bad

Oh, that's a very nice list. Too bad a lot of the images aren't archived, there's some ships I was researching but didn't add because I couldn't find a single image or even drawing. Though, I don't really know how to feel about landing craft or the really old Qing-era ships, they just seem a bit too... unwieldy.

Probably, but at the same time, it's been 2.5 years since the last naval tree was added, and they still haven't added France. It'll take a loooong time, maybe we'll get like idk, F-18s before this lol.

Yeah, it’s a shame a lot of images aren’t saved. But the author seems to have gotten them from government archives.

Which ships are you missing an image? I might have a picture of them.

Yeah,, I mainly put the landing crafts in just for the sake of it. Though the Japanese landing craft might be good as it has a bunch of 25mm guns. Some of the Qing ships may be good to help fill the bluewater fleet.

Just a consequence of dealing with large and incredibly detailed models. I'm willing to wait.

Currently I would like to find an image of Lin An (PF-77) in its early configuration with Japanese guns.

But for new ships, I need some for the PT boats, https://web.archive.org/web/20080917014122/http://60.250.180.26/taiwan/4406.html and https://web.archive.org/web/20080917014117/http://60.250.180.26/taiwan/4405.html, one of the ex-IJN T-25 MTBs https://web.archive.org/web/20080915155851/http://60.250.180.26/war/3120.html, and maybe a higher res photo of Xian Ning (ex-Lepanto).

I could also use a picture of the Type 206 Gunboat, I find it really weird that despite being an "in-service" class, there's 0 pictures of it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_206-class_gunboat Honestly I was thinking that it might not even exist and was just a misunderstanding or something.

Thanks for the help with this

So only have one of the PT-32/33. If the websites description is right one of them played in a movie as British CMB boat 102.

I guess the Patton-level redressing of that pt boat is good enough. Though with Lin An, I'm specifically looking for it in rocn service with the Japanese guns they put on it later.

Actually, I think the website is wrong about the movie, because that is certainly not a WW2-era PT-boat.

I've found this pic, numbered 513 like the website said it was at first. and it matches a Vosper, which were the primary mtbs built at the Annapolis Yacht Yard. https://page.om.qq.com/page/OXHv6aY7Y3VFfddslGmMPUEw0

You are right that’s the 513 / PTC-32. The one in the movie must be something different then lol

It also seems the Chinese warship museum has been revived but it looks like its still under construction.

So, if anyone's still here, what are your thoughts on adding Manchukuo ships? I know some support them in the Chinese tree while others support them in the Japanese tree.

I'm of the opinion that they have a place in the Chinese tree since Manchuko was still China at the end of the day, puppet state or not. A few of them were operated by former Chinese fleets too. Additionally, Japan isn't really in dire need of such ships.

Ding Bian (I have no idea what this means either, but someone I know said it might've been some sort of term for administration, literally means "fixed border" or something)

"Ding" means "Pacify" and "Bian" means "Border".

I think these are the T-25 torpedo boats. The serials match the ones stationed in Taiwan.

edit: also you can see the 2 midget submarines in the background (third in repair) and maybe a T-14 on the far right of the image. The torpedo boats look to be side by side so there very may well be all of them pictured here. Location is 高雄要港 now zuoying naval base.

This is from a comprehensive post war report about captured Japanese equipment in Taiwan.

7 torpedo boats were captured in total. Only the T-14’s and T-25’s in Kaohsiung show back up in ROCN records. There was one up in Hou Long (後龍) but it probably wasn’t in good enough condition.

edit: the one up in Hou Long was a T-14 numbered 850 and was damaged. The T-14’s & T-25’s were equipped with 2 x type 96 25mm guns, 2 x torpedos, 6 x depth charges

Looks like 1 x T-25 “AnKang”and 1 x T-14 “AnZe”served in the 3rd gunboat squadron of the ROCN.

Nice find, I was thinking it would be a good choice for the reserve premium to be inline with other nations' prem MTBs.

    Edit: anyone know what happened to the PF-1 suggestion? I can do a new one but the one posted was really good

If you're still wondering, it got archived last year because it lacked a poll

Also, if you have some info on the "PB-42~PB-74" Patrol Boats, could you post that? I just realized that that's probably what "PB60" is. https://web.archive.org/web/20080917014152/http://60.250.180.26/taiwan/4409.html
