Why APFSDS generates so much shrapnel in light vehicles?

I've using the BMD-4 hundreds of times and i always been killed with a single round, most of those times were due the whole crew killed by shrapnel.

The point here is that aluminium is a malleable, flexible and light metal, I don't see the point that it generates as much shrapnel as in image 2.

In ballistic simulations of penetration found in youtube a tungsten beam could easily penetrate throught a thick aluminium plate without generating shrapnell, I don't see the point of going through a 2-centimeter plate turning my crew into emmental cheese. Image 1

The damage model is FUBAR and they have to make all sorts of unrealistic compromise "features" to make most ammunition perform "reasonably".

IRL APFSDS would gut a light vehicle - there is much MUCH less "free space" than WT's modelling allows, so it would invariably hit something solid enough to create plenty of spalling - but all those little "bits and pieces" are not in WT's vehicles, so they have to make it spall heaps from even thin armour..
