Skins for the Mustang Mk IA

The Mustang IA (which happens to be one of my favourite aircraft, both in the game and in real life) has a large selection of skins, most of which were never used on the actual plane. We all know that the majority of those are eventually going to end up on American 'stangs where they belong, so I though I'd put forward some suggestions for alternative skins for the British variant. As a side note: some Mustang IAs were requisitioned and put into service by the USAAF, which is why most of the skins below are actually American.

1. Production Mustang IA on a test flight over California in 1942, overall green finish.

2. Another Mustang IA on a test flight, this time in full RAF camouflage (Dark Green/Dark Earth/Sky). Note the location of US white stars - they're exactly where the Brits would put their roundels.

3. Four Mustang IAs receiving maintenance from North American Aviation mechanics. Two planes are in RAF camo, while the other two are painted green (I don't know much about American camos, but I think this might be standard issue Olive Drab). Note the British fin flash on the tail of FD553. I suspect these are the aircraft redirected from the British Mustang IA (NA-91) order to the USAAF and pressed into service as the F-6A / P-51 (no version tag letter was yet assignet to the aircraft, the P-51A was a later variant).

Here are some more RAF skins for the Mustang IA. Both FD472 and FD544 (only 9 aircraft away from FD553 seen in the picture above) are wearing standard late war ETO camouflage, with the latter being more interesting (IMHO) because it doesn't have invasion stripes.

At the bottom of this page you'll find a serial number table with cross referenced British and American serials for the early Mustangs, which should ease the photographic identification of early 'stangs.

EDIT: One of the pictures wasn't working, so I substituted it for a similar one but from a different website.

Thanks OpInfo, hope at least one of these makes it into the game. You gotta love the Kodachrome slides, it's incredible how vivid the colours are given how long ago they were taken (long before colour film became popular).

Best hold on to those pictures and save them for a later date. It will probably be a while until new skins will become a topic, and especially for the Mk. IA, since it already has so many skins available.
