Tips, tricks and tactics for tank drivers.

So as the tanks will be released Soon™™ (24th or 29th hopefully), i decided to make this thread about tips, tricks and tactics on how to play with the tanks.

Alot of you might already know this, i will go on about the basics. So this is mostly for new players.

 • What is a tank?

If you don't know that by now you are quite slow. But in War Thunder tanks will be added, but luckly not the tanks the modern military has. So don't expect these tanks in War Thunder:
But rather expect these tanks:
Those are also the confirmed tanks to be added in War Thunder for the germans and russians.

 • What kind of tanks are there?

There are some differences between the tanks we will get.

Light tanks: Most light tanks are light, what a suprice right? But they are most times poorly armored, small and quick. Good for scouting and distracting the enemies.

Medium tanks: Most times light armored, but not as light armored when compared to a light tank. Made most times to be quick and mobile in the heat of battle.

Heavy tanks: Most times really well armored, slow most of the times. Made to break trough defences or to support from a distance.

Tank destroyers: These are most times a mix if you wanna compare them to light/medium/heavy tanks. Some tank destroyers don't have a turret, but they are made to stay from a distance and shoot at targets. Or places to ambush enemy tanks, but more about that later.

 • Cover and angling your armor.

Now don't be stupid when you are in a tank. You can still DIE REALLY QUICK. 1 good shot and you tank can be knocked out, no matter how thick your armor is.

Before we start talking about cover and angling your armor you should know these things about your tank.

How thick is my frontal armor and is it angled?
How thick is my side armor and is it angled?
How thick is my rear armor and is it angled?

If your tank HAS a turret:

How thick is my frontal turret armor and is it angled?
How thick is my side turret armor and is it angled?
How thick is my rear turret armor and is it angled?

Most tanks are really thick from the front (Turret included), but are lightly armored from the sides and the rear. Most tanks in WW2 weren't angled too, angled armor came in the end of the war.

Now if you still don't know what thick and angled armor is.
Thick armor is basicly THICK armor. Nothing more and nothing less.
Angled armor is armor mounted on a degree. This is done becouse shells are more likely to bounce off an angled piece of armor than a flat piece of armor. So a combination of heavily angled armor is ALMOST imposible to penetrate. Later i will explain how you can angle your armor to decrees the chance to be penetrated.

Here is a good example of a tank that is really well armored from the front, and lightly (compared to the frontal armor) from the sides and the rear. This tank was in the early stages of the war and thats why you don't see that many angles in the armor. The Tiger Tank:

Here is a tank that is angled really well from the front. The IS-3:

You might think that when you are in example a tiger tank, you are IMPOSIBLE to penetrate from the front. Well I'm here to tell you: YOU ARE WRONG. You can still be penetrated from the front. Don't ever forget that. So always take cover when you can.

Some times you will get in the situation where both of you won't have any cover, then you are both depending on your armor. Here you can see a picture of 2 of the same tanks facing each other off, the one on the left is more likely to win the fight becouse his armor is angled.

 • Gun depression.

Some of you might not know what this is, but ingame you will see that this is quite a big thing to pay attention to. How high and how low your gun can aim basicly, some times you will get in the sittuation where you are comming off a hill, under the hill there is an enemy but you don't have a shot at him, BUT HE DOES. Here is an illustation of one of those situations:

Now that isn't the real gun depression of the Tiger, it might be better or worse. I sadly don't know what it exacly is. But thats where you need to pay attention to, you can easly get shot in your Lower front glacis. This a a weak spot on most tanks.

Stay tuned! Will update and add more information!!

Nice job, don't forget to include ammunition and type of gun, it's critical for determining the penetration of the armor. And also don't forget about types of guns has certain ranges of peg as well.

I will later on, but i wanna start first with tactics. About how you can abush a tank that is way more superior than yours. I will later also go on about the difrent guys, the velocaty etc etc. But now its quite late in the night and i need to wake up early tommorow...

Lol yes, I'm a complete novice when it comes to air to air combat but I do know a bit about armour.

Lets see how the good old German LFP fares in WT.

So i guess you know all about how tanks have health bars?

I think that i'd rather trust information from wikipedia then from WoT.

No but they know basics of tactis, positioning, zoning, cover use, protecting smaller allies with larger tank and so on.

WOT is bad with HP bars, but tactics don`t change.

Here's hoping that tanks are released with the PS4 launch this month!

I know (as of the last time I was reading pieces around WT Tanks) that HB and FRB won't be available with the initial release, but I can not wait until we get to see some nice events... Pz V vs M4's anyone?
