Chapter 2: Naval Warefare at the Aerial Warefare theatre.

<updated>

With

Seaplanes

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seaplane

, i.e. the larger Flying boats

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_boat

and the smaller Floatplanes

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floatplane

You may land on airfields and on water.

Gaijin's calls such planes "flying boats",

So there are:

The US airplanes

PBY-5 Catalina

http://wiki.warthunder.com/index.php?title=PBY-5Catalina

Acceptable speed when touching the water: 200 km/h

I am unable to change my direction when I am in the water ( by propulsion, at the start operation ) :-(

PBY-5a Catalina

http://wiki.warthunder.com/index.php?title=PBY-5a_Catalina

You may land on airfields and on water

OS2U-1 Kingfisher, Rank1 - As of 2016-08, it is not available in the WT Tech Tree :-(

the UK airplane

Sunderland Mk IIIa

http://wiki.warthunder.com/index.php?title=Sunderland_Mk.IIIa

http://warthunder.com/en/devblog/current/874/

the Japanese airplanes

F1M2

http://wiki.warthunder.com/index.php?title=F1M2

You may land both on water and on airfields.Might land on aircraft carrriers, according to Wiki. I don´t see aircraft carriers on BP1.3 battlefields...

Pressing "G" causes the error message "No gear control", while there are flaps "F" for landing

Acceptable speed when touching the water: 70 km/h, not 150  km/h

I am able to change my direction when I am in the water ( by propulsion, at the start operation ) :-)

H6K4

http://wiki.warthunder.com/index.php?title=H6K4

H8K2

http://wiki.warthunder.com/index.php?title=H8K2

A6M2-N

http://wiki.warthunder.com/index.php?title=A6M2-N

Acceptable speed when touching the water: 70 km/h, not 150  km/h

the German airplane

He 51 B-2/Hydroplane - As of 2016-08, it is not available in the WT Tech Tree :-(

http://wiki.warthunder.com/index.php?title=He_51_B-2/Hydroplane

the Russian airplane

MBR-2

http://wiki.warthunder.com/index.php?title=MBR-2

http://warthunder.com/en/devblog/current/887/  - The flying boat will be added to the game in War Thunder update 1.57 Battle March"

According to

http://wiki.warthunder.com/index.php?title=Category:USSR_air_forces

it is a "gift vehicle"

and two premium airplanes ( "Catalina PYB5-A" for USSR/Russia, "Catalina IVa" for UK )

You may land safely on lakes and rivers :-), and start again.

For large flying boats, your airspeed should be 150 km/h or less, when your airplane touches the water for the first time.

For small floatplanes, your airspeed should be 70-80 km/h, when your airplane touches the water for the first time.

Remember, water is no airfield, so don´t press "G" to lift down the aircraft's gear (  aircraft undercarriage ) ! Setting flaps ( "F" ) for landing might be ok, but the PBY-5 & BPY-5a don´t have such.

- On the other hand, the large flying boats and smaller floatplanes should be able to land on an airfield. Now at "Saipan",  I was able to land on the Pacific Ocean and swimming by air propeller propulsion to the beach, but then the "G" function didn´t work, so I was unable to roll from the beach water onto the sand beach.. I was unable to move like a boat....

- With the friendly blue airfield, I may land with gear-down "G", but if I look at the airplane, there are no wheels ( in opposite to the rendered display in the hangar ). So how could the airplane then safely roll on the airfield ?! After a repair and re-ammunition on the friendly blue airfield, WT fades out and fades in the display, and I am already in the air with my airplane...

In opposite, normal airplanes may just land safely and start again on the own homebase airfield.

Though you might land on the red enemy airfield, then you must respawn, by the message "Enemy landed on your airfield and surrendered" sent to every member of the red team .

If you try to land somewhere else, usually the WT system handles this as "Crash", e.g. the propeller get broken, and you must respawn.

a)

Aerial Warefare battleground for BP 2.0, 2.3, 2.7, known to have a lake, river or ocean to land on the water:

1. Khalkhin Gol ( name of a river, USSR vs. Japan pre-WWII conflict ) - A large lake, a medium-size lake and some small lakes

Successful landing on the large lake & take-off!

Successful landing on the medium-size lake. With large flying boats ( e.g. "PBY-5a Catalina", "H6K4" ), I was unable to start, though the airplane was intact ( no "Crash" landing ). With small floatplanes ( "A6M2-N" ) I was able to start, successfully.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battles_of_Khalkhin_Gol

2.

2a. Berlin suburbs - Lake "Wannsee"

Successful landing on the lake "Wannsee" & take-off!

It's difficult to land on the slim river(s), I often crash  when I try!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wannsee

2b. Berlin ( = Berlin-Rangsdorf, with airport "Flugplatz Rangsdorf", which was in use1936-1994 ). There is a big lake "Rangsdorfer See". It should be possible to land and take-off on the lake

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rangsdorf

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rangsdorfer_See

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flugplatz_Rangsdorf

3. Cliffed coast ( at unknown location ) - Unknown ocean sea

Successful landing & take-off!

4. England / UK / Great Britain

4a. Foggy Albion ( South England / UK ) - North Sea

Successful landing on the North Sea ( next to "Dyrnchurch" ) & take-off!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dymchurch

4b. Britain ( BR2.7, next to Ramsgate ) - North Sea

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramsgate

4c. Britain ( BR2.7, Dover ) - North Sea

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dover

5. Saipan - Pacific Ocean.

Successful landing on the Pacific Ocean & take-off!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saipan

5. Spain ( unknown location, but definitely on the waterside to the  Mediterranean Sea, near the French boarder, "in memory of the Spanish Civil War" ) - Mediterranean Sea

Successful landing on the Mediterranean Sea & take-off!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_Civil_War

6. Sicily

6a. Mediterranean Island ( the Italian island Sicily, next to the town Catania ) - some slim rivers and the Mediterranean Sea.

It's difficult to land on the slim rivers, I often crash  when I try!

Successful landing on the Mediterranean Sea & take-off!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catania

7. Alpine Meadows ( at unknown location, might be the Alps, i.e. an unknown location in France(!), Austria(!), Italy(!), Germany(?), Switzerland(No!) ) - Water reservoir at the east ( left ) side of the battlefield

Successful landing on the water reservoir & take-off!

8. Stalingrad ( USSR )

8.1 "Stalingrad" ( = Stalingrad at Summer ) - The large river "Wolga", some slim dead ends of this river - domain specific word might be "meander" -, plus some other slim rivers sourcing on the battleground.

It's difficult to land on the slim rivers, I often crash  when I try! I successfully landed at a wide section of a river next to "Krasny Pakhar", but.. I crashed at take-off, as I was unable to change the direction of my airplane according to the riverbed during the start phase :-(. So landing & starting on slim rivers is tricky....

Successful landing on the large river "Wolga" & take-off!

8.2 "Stalingrad. Winter"

The large river "Wolga" and all other small rivers are frozen.

Successful landing on the large river "Wolga" & take-off, with standard planes with gear :-).

http://wiki.warthunder.com/index.php?title=Stalingrad

8.3 "Great River" ( battlefield next to Stalingrad ) - The large river "Wolga"

9. African canyon ( at unknown location ) - 2 slim rivers in a deep canyon ( i.e. surrounded by high mountains ) and an unkown ocean sea in the East.

Successful landing and take-off  with small floatplanes on the ocean in the East, the water food of one of the rivers to the ocean in the East, and on even parts of the river in the South.

You may try to land on the Ocean sea at the east ( left ) side of the battlefield, but you are warned "Return to the Battlefield", and by magic if you don´t obey, WT does a fade-out and fade-in, you are reset to a flight position  within the battlefield - and not killed as with Ground Warefare :-). I did not yet succeed, but it should be possible to land on the Ocean!

10. Gorge ( at unknown location in a rock area, e.g. the "Alps", a Winter theme, alternative english word for "Canyon"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canyon

, BP2.7) . There is a slim river in a deep canyon.

It's difficult to land on the slim rivers. I crashed when I tried to land on one of it!

11. Rice Terraces ( at unknown location, probably in Asia. BP2.7 ) - A  slim river, a big lake and a smaller lake. An ocean ( e.g. Pacific Ocean ) is at the edge of the battleground.

It's difficult to land on the slim river. It is possible to land on the 2 lakes and to start successfully again. It should be possible to land and take-off on the ocean.

12. Peleliu, BR 2.7 - The Pacific Ocean. You may land and start on the ocean.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peleliu

in memory of the Battle of Peleiu

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Peleliu

)

13. Krymsk, BR 2.7

A very-small lake in the South. I succeeded to land with a small floatplane ( A6M2-N ), but crashed at take-off.

A big lake in the North, the "Black Sea" ocean in the South. Successful landing & take-off on the lake, with small floatplanes. The "Black Sea" is suitable for large flying boats

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krymsk

A few nitpicks... you've ignored the Japanese floatplanes.  And the premium german and russian ones.  And the OS2U.

Also on the PBY-5 (not the PBY-5a, which has actual landing gear), the landing gear control will deploy wingtip floats, and absolutely should be used while landing.

Thanks for feedback :-)

a)

I didn´t find it in my current tree of free or premium planes, though they are in the Wiki and obviously were available in the past ?!

OS2U-1 Kingfisher, should be in Rank1

http://wiki.warthunder.com/index.php?title=OS2U-1Kingfisher

OS2U-3 Kingfisher, should be in Rank1

http://wiki.warthunder.com/index.php?title=OS2U-3Kingfisher

b)

Yes, PBY-5a Catalina is a premium Russian airplane.

But I didn´t find such seaplanes at German premium airplanes.

So I updated my article,

I would be pleased if there is still something missing :-).

c)

Where may I do with the optional Torpedo ? So far I saw on BP Reserve - BP 2.0 just "Patrol Boats", which can easily be sunk by machine gun (!), or bombs. If I may get up to 12 bombs, why should I decide for a single Torpedo?!

So a Torpedo for a patrol boat would be really a waste ( and the enourmous reload time after a single Torpedo shot is annoying )...

Any comments at this time :-)?!

Sincerely

Rolf

PBY-5a is in the US main tree.  Or did that get removed too?  The OS2U was removed from the main tree recently, so only those of us that already have them see them now.

Torpedoes are useless in arcade, and are basically a surefire way to die.  This was not always the case, but since patch 1.39 or so, they've been rendered extremely impractical as weapons.

You forgot the premium British Catalina Mk IVa, which seems to be the same as the PBY-5a.

If you want to use torpedoes, go to Realistic battles. In AB it's just suicide.

I think there's a floatplane version of the He 51 that was a reward for an event or something like that so it's  no longer available . Yes, here is it: http://wiki.warthunder.com/index.php?title=He_51_B-2_/Hydroplane

Btw, there are many German floatplanes not/never available at WT, including

1.

Dornier Do 24 ( really famous still, in Germany, on the level of Catalina PBY-5 )

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dornier_Do_24

2.

Blohm & Voss BV 2xx

That's what I said - a modification of the reserve biplane.  Didn't realize it was hidden if you don't own it though - I got it in the event, so I see it.  Much like I didn't realize the OS2 had been removed, since I have them.

The Do 24 and BV 222 don't have bombs listed, so they wouldn't be useful in the game. The BV 238, though... 9 tons of bombs, 2 cannons and a whopping quantity of 20 machine guns! I'd love to hear the cries of fighter pilots of how OP that thing is :D.

Yeah, there are many planes are hidden if you don't own them. Which is a shame, there are some interesting planes you can't own anymore.

Wikis have a "problem", there is usually no directory = table of contents.

Is there anyhow a table of all one-available items at the WT wiki, so that I may check myself for floating airplanes, floating vehicles, SPAAs, ect :-)?!

You mean the list of hidden unavailable vehicles? I'm not really familiar with the wiki, but there's a thread in the Machinery of War Discussion forum with a list. It's the first topic on the Aircraft Discussion page. As far as I know the only plane you're missing on your list is the Russian MBR-2 flying boat.

The payload limited to 5 tons, though. It stills sounds like a great plane as long as Gaijin doesn't overtier it. 4.0 BR would do it for me.

It's better armed and carries more bombs than any of those. The closest thing in the German tree is the Do 217 E-2, 4 tons of bombs, a cannon and 5 MGs at 4.7. I think it should be somewhere close to 4.0-4.7, any higher and late tier prop fighters will eat it alive.
