Battle of Monte Cassino

History-
The Battle of Monte Cassino was a series of four costly battles from January 17th- May 18th 1944 during the Italian campaign of WW2 with the mission of breaking through to Rome. At the beginning of 1944, the western half of the Winter Line was being anchored by Germans holding the Rapido, Liri, and Garigliano valleys and some of the surrounding peaks and ridges. Together, these features formed the Gustav Line. Monte Cassino, a historic hilltop abbey founded in CE 529 by Benedict of Nursia, dominated the nearby town of Cassino and the entrances to the Liri and Rapido valleys. Lying in a protected historic zone, it had been left unoccupied by the Germans. They had, however, manned some positions set into the steep slopes below the abbey's walls .Repeated pinpoint artillery attacks on Allied assault troops caused their leaders to conclude the abbey was being used by the Germans as an observation post, at the least. Fears escalated along with casualties, and in spite of a lack of clear evidence, it was marked for destruction. On 15 February American bombers dropped 1,400 tons of high explosives, creating widespread damage. The raid failed to achieve its objective, as German Paratroopers occupied the rubble and established excellent defensive positions amid the ruins. Between 17 January and 18 May, Monte Cassino and the Gustav defenses were assaulted four times by Allied troops, the last involving twenty divisions attacking along a twenty-mile front. The German defenders were finally driven from their positions, but at a high cost. The capture of Monte Cassino tolled some 55,000 Allied casualties, with German losses being estimated at around 20,000 killed and wounded.

In-game-
For ground forces a majority of the fighting would take place in the town of Cassino which is just south of Monastery Hill. It would feature the bombed out town and the surrounding areas. It will include various levels with paths overlooking the town with light brush and primarily dead or burned trees. Overall it will be very uneven terrain filled with bomb craters, rocks, and plenty of rubble. A target for air forces could be axis defensive positions within the valleys. There is also the possibility for having a static objective for allied planes to bomb the Abbey.

the terrain looks rather difficult and hilly, and trees/bushes are sparse in the photos. its looks like hard place to maneuver around in.

the hill with abbey looks dramatic and ruins such as that could be interesting to battle in

try to find more photos of the specific areas you consider suitable

i think montecassino would be an amazing map in war thunder.  It's a very distinctive map, it has great historical value and it's a nice place to play

would be perfect both for air and ground forces. also could be interesting to see a new game mode with that, with one team that has to defende an objective and the other to capture it, like in red orchestra, instead of the usual simmetrical battle.

this could introduce a totally new kind of gameplay in the game, wich actually i'm not sure Gaijin are interested in.

For example, airplane map.

Just imagine to have this thing ( wich is very squary, actually not that hard to make a 3d model ) and that you can bomb it and destroy it by plane. This is going to be like an airfield with his health bar, One team, the german one, as the main objective has to defend it, other team has to destroy it.

not to mention how cool the map would look from a plane, the monastery up its hill, italian campaign all around it, it would look even better than the coloigne cathedral.

and the game apart from Sicily totally lacks italian maps.

or for ground forces map

one team, the germans, starting up the hill, the other starting down, only one way up the hill and the two forces are forced to confront themselves on that single road.

What is going on here? Does anyone know why a cow is tied to a Stug?

i guess so that it doesnt run away... the stug seems to be destroyed... so i guess after the battle somebody might have used the wreck to... keep his cow from running away

Seems a certain soldier has some beef with that stug.

Sorry not sorry.

Anyways, I full on support this map idea! Could even challenge one of sun tzu's key points in tactics and manuvers, which is to occupy the high ground, keep the enemy on the low ground and never attempt to fight uphill (as archers in the time this was published would hold the advantage atop the hill. Troops below would have to crawl up the slope.)

Very asymmetric!

In contrary, i am helding my vote. This was infantry battle during which tanks were used purely as close support. I would like to have more open maps for GF, were you can exploit mobility and tactics.
