Type 3 Medium Tank Chi-Nu (三式中戦車 チヌ San-shiki chū-sensha Chi-nu) was a medium tank of Imperial Japanese Army in World War II. It was an improved version of the Type 97 Chi-Ha line by giving it a Type 3 75 mm Tank Gun, one of the largest guns used on Japanese tanks during the war.

At the beginning stage of Pacific War, Type 97 Chi-Ha and Type 95 Ha-Go (light tank) were the backbone of the Imperial Japanese Army. As the war progressed, these tanks started to face significant challenges posed by Allied tanks.

Chi-Nu.JPG

In Burma Campaign and Philippines Campaign, the firepower of 57 mm cannon mounted on Type 97 was proven to be insufficient against Allied tanks. Imperial Japanese Army therefore developed Type 1 47 mm tank cannon which had higher armor penetrating power. This cannon was later mounted on Type 97 Chi-Ha and Type 1 Chi-He Medium Tanks. The arrival of new tank cannons made it possible for Japanese armored forces to stand against Allied tanks.

At the later stage of the war, large numbers of American M4 Sherman tanks arrived at the front line and put new pressure on Japanese armored forces. The Imperial General Headquarters (大本営 Daihon'ei) decided to develop a new tank to counter the enemy threat as well as a replacement for Type 97 and Type 95.

The Army Technical Bureau had been working on the Type 4 Chi-To medium tank as the counter to the M4 Sherman, but there were problems and delays in the program. As a result a stopgap tank was required. The Type 3 medium tank Chi-Nu was developed to cope with the M4 Sherman. Work on the Type 3 Chi-Nustarted in May 1943 and was finished by October, just six months later. The low priority given to tank production by 1943 meant that the Type 3 did not actually enter production until 1944, by which time raw materials were in very short supply, and much of Japan's industrial infrastructure had been destroyed by American strategic bombing.

Chi-Nu%204.JPG

Armor and Protection:

The Type 3 Chi-Nu retained the same chassis and suspension of the Type 97 but with a large new hexagonal gun turret and a commander's cupola. It was the last design that based directly on Type 97 lineage. The hull of the tank resembled the hull of Type 1 Chi-He but with an enlarged turret ring to fit the new turret.

Mobility:

The Chi-Nu used a lever system rather than a handle system. It also had the same engine as the Chi-He, producing 240 hp and gave the tank a top speed of 38.8 Kph

Armament:

Type 3 Chi-Nu:

  • 75 mm caliber Type 3 Tank Gun; could be elevated between -10 and +25 degrees.
  • Fired a shell at a muzzle velocity of 680 meters per second (2,200 ft/s)
  • Gave an armor penetration of 90 mm (3.5 in) at 100 m (110 yd) and 65 mm (2.6 in) at 1,000 m (1,100 yd).

Service record:

The Type 3 was allocated to the Japanese home islands to defend against the projected Allied Invasion. At least 6 tank regiments were equipped with Type 3 Chi-Nu tanks on Kyūshū and Honshū, including the 1st Tank Division and 4th Tank Division based around Tokyo. As the surrender of Japan occurred before that invasion, the Type 3 was never used in combat. "It saw combat in the "Kyujo Incident".

STB-1 will be the strongest tank in Japanese tree

With 53kph max speed, over 20hp/t power to weigh ratio... This is one mobile MBT. It's not as insane as Leopard 1a1... However it does have same 105mm gun as Leopard and it acually has armour...

357mm at turret front effective armour
180mm effective on hull
However hull sides are only 35mm and rear is 25mm
-12 degrees of gun depression!

Type 4 Chi-To
14bj32s.jpg

Used Type 5 75mm gun:

AP Chrome:
115mm from 500m

HE: 50mm

AP Chrome:
130mm from 500m

Senn-ei-dann:
140mm from 500m

Senn-ei-dan was a japanese late war shell. It was actually a fused HE shell with high penetration capability. It was as powerful in explosion as a regular HE but because it was fused, it would blow up inside enemy tank causing devastating damage and setting all ammo racks and fuel tanks off. Single penetration with this shell should be 90% of the time a 1 shot business Edited by Laurelix

I have bad expirience with all Japanese tanks in any other game that has them. Low armor is the biggest issue. However, I will support in hopes that WT will make this tank good.  :)s

In WoT they underperform in armor
Their guns underperform in penetration.

Heavy tanks benefit the most in HP system where heavy tanks get high alpha damage over medium tanks.

Japanese tanks in WT will be competitive and they will be able to use their gun depression and camoflauge better. In WoT it's easy to shoot someone even if slightest thing is sticking out. In WT you acually have to compensate for range and if your tank is at slight angle on the side you have to compensate for that also. Edited by Laurelix

There was also a nod to the Type 3 Chi-Nu not seeing a combat in Girls Und Panzer in the finals of the Tankery season the Type 3 was added at the last minute to Oorai's lineup. The tank was having problems with the transmisson it was also not very helpful that the crew didn't really know what they were doing. They wound up reversing and eating a shot in the ass from a 8.8cm/L70 gun from a Tiger II.

I know can't wait but yeah it was a humorous nod considering that no Chi-Nus ever fired a shot in anger during WWII.
