Please try following:

  1. open Steam but not in Big Picture Mode
  2. go to Steam settings and 'Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game'
  3. go to Steam library -> right click on War Thunder -> Proberties -> General and check here also 'Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game'
  4. start game through Steam/Big Picture Mode and try again

I think i know what is going on here...

Steam only seems to be 'connected' to War Thunder when the launcher is open.

If the launcher closes when pressing play, the steam overlay will not be present nor will it track your time played. Once the launcher closes, steam thinks you have stopped playing the game.

Is there anyway to keep the launcher open when you hit play? I think this will fix it!

I've found a fix for this (at least in my case)

If you had previously set Aces to run as administrator (under the compatibility mode tab) and steam is not run under the same conditions, then the overlay won't work.

Devs - can this be captured under a known issue of some sort?

  • 3 weeks later...
  1. go to Steam directory and right click on Steam.exe and GameOverlayUI
  2. -> Properties
  3. -> Compatibility
  4. -> 'Change settings for all users'
  5. enable 'Run as administrator'
  6. -> Accept and OK

Same in War Thunder directory with launcher.exe and in War Thunder\win32 and/or War Thunder\win64 with the aces.exe.
