In the early 1980ies, comparative test were being done between Kamov’s V-80 and Mil Moscow’s Mi-28. The results of those test showed the V-80 generally had better flight characteristics and had a better price/quality ratio. On top of those, unlike previous helicopters, V-80 only required a single crew member. While those test were being done, Yakovlev and Kamov made a proposal for specialized helicopter opto-electrical and radar complex that would be intended for reconnaissance on the battlefield and command of a group of attack helicopters. Initially, this system was intended for Kamov’s V-60(What later became the Ka-60). However, with the poor economic state of the USSR, in late 1980s and early 1990s, development of the V-80 and the helicopter “battle management system” was essentially halted. While everything was slowed, chief designer, Sergey Mikheyev made the decision to merge the projects. This would mean the V-80 would be able to do almost any task. From monitoring a group of tanks to then effectively engage said tanks.
In 1990 the V-80 would receive the designation of Ka-50 and would begin state trials which would last until 1994. After a short time period, in 1995, by decree of the then President of the Russian Federation, Boris Yeltsin, the Ka-50 was accepted into service with the Russian Air Force(VSS). Unfortunately, due to financial difficulties, only 10 would be built.
In 1996-1997, a Ka-50 was upgraded with a new cockpit that brought back the traditional two man crew. Unlike those helicopters, Mikheyev would have the crew members placed side-by-side. This would allow for easier communication and greater battlefield observation. This modification would get the designation of Ka-52. In the summer of 1997, the MoD requested some changes that would bring the handling back up to the Ka-50’s level. With these done, Ka-52 was able to perform the unique capabilities. One of these being the funnel. The helicopter flies sideways in a downward circle, this allows for a constant attack while not needing to remain stationary.
The primary difference between the production Ka-52 and Ka-50, is the electronics. Ka-52 come equipped with the “Argument-2000” fifth generation multi-function unified complex. The most noticeable part of the complex is the TOES-520. This spherical ball sight under the nose functions as the primary sighting system the Ka-52 carries.
In 2008 would began state trail and the first delvire of 3 helicopters would be completed soon after. In 2011, the Ka-52 would be finally be accepted into service with the Russian Air Force.
A year later, the Ka-52 would be modified with an additional set of pylons. This would increase the maximum payload to 2800Kg.
