Tornado ADV

After the development of the standards tornado InterDictor Strike(IDS) aircraft the Air Defence Variant was dedicated for the air Interception role. It included several modifications and improvements over  the standard tornado IDS such as modified RB199 engines with greater thrust output and Fox Hunter Airborne Intercept radar. It is worth noting that the ADV is not a fighter she was never desgined to be, the ADV is a long range interceptor aircraft the air supremecy role was filled by aircraft like the Eurofighter Typhoon which servers more as dedicated fighters. The reason for the development of the tornado ADV stemmed from the RAF requirement for a new interceptor to replace the ageing lightning force. As the other members of the tornado project were not overly interested in an interceptor variant of the British had to proceed alone. This meant the actual modifications were not carried out by Panavia but BAE who in 1976 were contracted to produce 3 prototype aircraft (this was helped by the fact that BAE produced 42.5% of  the Tornado any way). The first flight took place on the 27th of October 1979. Over it's short service life the ADV saw several improvements one interesting one was adaptation for the Seupresion of Enemy Air Defences ( SEAD)(thes modified tornadoes were called EF.3 and used the ALARM anti radiation missile).

The first time the ADV saw active combat was in first gulf war, they later saw service in both Iraqi. Although not in war after the Iraqi war they saw much use intercpeting and turning away Russian bomber from UK airspace. The ADV was retired from RAF service in March 2011 being replaced by the Eurofighter. Although this is not the End of the story for the Tornado ADV the British technology group QinetiQ leased 3 tornadoes from the RAF to use as trial platforms for the new MBDA meteor missile, these reminded flying for another year carrying out trials.
