This suggestion is specifically for the Mirage 5F used by the French air force, and not for any of the export variants.

The Dassault Mirage 5 was a modification of the company's successful Mirage III fighter aircraft, originally meant for export to Israel in the mid-1960s.  Originally the specification called for a simplified design and reduced avionics in order to provide room for additional fuel and ordinance hardpoints to improve the aircraft's endurance and ground attack capability.  Radar was removed from the aircraft because it was not deemed a critical feature for middle eastern operations due to the frequent clear weather.  The Mirage 5 design kept the two 30mm cannons from the Mirage III and added two additional ordinance hardpoints for a total of seven; it could carry 4,000 kg of ordinance, including bombs, rocket pods, drop tanks, reconnaissance pods, or heat-seeking missiles.

Rising tensions in the middle east led to France placing an embargo on export of the Mirage 5 aircraft to Israel, although the Israelis created the IAI Nesher aircraft off of either blueprints of the Mirage 5 or aircraft surreptitiously provided to them from France despite the embargo (suspected by some but not confirmed).  The 50 Mirage 5 aircraft originally built for the Israeli contract were given to the French air force under the designation of Mirage 5F.  Multiple export variants of the Mirage 5 were also built and sold to a wide variety of nations, including Abu Dhabi, Argentina, Belgium, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Egypt, Gabon, Libya, Pakistan, Peru, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Venezuela, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Zaire at the time).  Many of these variants were equipped with radar, two-seat capability, or other changes from the original design.

The Mirage 5F would be a great high-tier jet to add to the French tree!

+1

It would be nice to see right after the Mirage IIIC/E in the tech tree once it's added.

The Mirage 5F was more of a fighter bomber, it was lighter than the Mirage IIIE, with the same engine, being probably the best performing of the Mirage III family, so it's more of a strike fighter, with excellent fighting capability

As we already have planes such as the Vautour IIB or the B-57/Canberra, I don't really see a problem with the addition of the Mirage IV.

I don't know, the fact that it has no conventional bomb

It does though :

Well this is an artist rendition of course. And the Mirage IVK was never produced in the end. But the Mirage IVA is real. I'm fairly certain I saw photos of it with conventional bombs attached (although not as many, I think). It is a viable bomber.

As soon as you show me a real picture with conventional armament I'll support it but for now I never heard about a K Variant or conventional bomb

What I know however : the mirage 4 was faster with the bomb than without it

I don't have a photo but I know where to find one, and its context.

BEAUMONT Hervé, Docavia n°65 MIRAGE IV, bombardier stratégique, édition Larivière, 2003.

Page 124 : In 1965, the British considered buying Mirage IV instead of F-111 for tactical bombing, because they were less expensive, and their already were some agreements with the French at the time. Dassault presented to the British delegation a Mirage IV outfitted with 8 x 400kg STRIM type 21 bombs. There is a photo in this specific page of the book, which I do not posess at the moment.

Moreover, there are several accounts of British sources saying the plane could in theory be able to be outfitted with 16 x 1000 lb bombs, as well as Martel AS missile.

And I've read multiple sources stating it was indeed tested with the Martel, although I can't find any picture apart from these

It is shown with 8 bombs in those pictures but I'm sure 16 could be fitted. It should also be capable of carrying flare pods and has some kind of RWR.

I'm not sure but this might partially be because the hole under the fuselage housing the nuclear ordnance isn't very aerodynamic when the bomb isn't there anymore. And maybe because it changes the position of the center of gravity.

Thank you Cedjoe. You know, with all that, you could do a suggestion out of it, with the proper sources. You got the photos for it.

That said, this is the Mirage 5 topic. I'd suggest we get back on topic.

Of course.

I might try a suggestion when I get the time.
