The Dassault Milan was a french prototype ground striker modification for the Mirage 3 family.

It's project started in 1967 when the Swiss airforce asked for tactical support aircraft which are even more manuverable than the Mirage 3. For that reason Dassault decided to add retractable "Whiskers", small surfaces on the nose of the aircraft. They were supposed to increase it's flight performance in various areas like: reduced take off distance, increased payload and steeper banking along valleys and a decreased approach speed by 20 knots.

The first prototype Mirage 5J n°2 nicknamed "Asterix" for the cartoon characters mustache had it's first flight in september 1968 after successful wind tunnel trials. This prototype had fixed whiskers which were adjustable by increments of around 10°.

The second prototype called Mirage III R n°344 called Milan 01 was fitted with retractable whiskers. It's test flights began in May 1969. The final version used a Mirage 3 R fuselage and an Atar 9K50 engine providing 70.6 kN of thrust. For the weapon systems the same ones as in the Jaguar and Mirage 3E were used as well as some new ones.

The Milan's maiden flight took place in May 1970 however in May 1972 the Milan S 01 was jousted with the Corsair 2. In the end the swiss airforce decided to not buy either of them but increase the lifetime of their Hunters and later on buy Northrop F5. Shortly after the Milan returned to France it was fitted with an inertial system and a cathode sight unit both technologies brought home from the contest. The Milan project defined future weapon systems which were to equip export versions of the Mirage F1 and Super Etendard.

If I'm not mistaken, the name is only Milan, not Mirage Milan ;)

+1

You're right, my bad. It is based off a Mirage 3 so I thought I'd put it in there too since then people would immediately recognize the series.

You can write « Dassault Milan : A further development of the Mirage III » or something like that ;)

reminds me of the AMX-56 :D

The Mirage 5 is part of the Mirage III family ;)

Milan is just the kind of perfect premium.
Unique and interesting enough and at the same time close to the tree material.

Yeah I'd rather see the Milan than a Kfir or some other foreign modification as this one was actually modified by France.

I'm not against foreing modification, there is plenty this kind already in game, and it add a whole regiment of unique mirages

There are already something like 10 mirage III/V variants that we could see as tech tree or premium vehicles before we start adding foreign modifications.

I have some more information on the Milan if you would like it. I've been meaning to make some mirage suggestions for a while, but I cant find the time. I'm glad someone else could. This page was taken from Jane's all the world's aircraft 1972-1973 and includes weights, rate of climb, suspended armament, and other information. If you have any questions about the information presented I can try to answer them.

And as such, I'd rather see proper french aircraft in the french tree, and foreign modifications as events/premiums

We’re never getting all these Mirage III variants in the tree, so we might as well get them as premiums. I’d rather see French prototypes than foreign modifications as premiums, as it’s a French tree after all, and should represent what France might have used in case of conflict.

Sorry I didn't epress myself clearly, in fact, except for some of them, all the export aircraft were made in france first, sure there is few foreign made modifications like the israeli ones but not that much. Also I agree in that case it's better to have it in Event/Prem, but do we have to cut out all the export model? or do we have the space to have it in the tree, I mean at high ranks grind is quite expensive in time and money (even with the help of Prem time acoumpt or else) I don't see giving interest to player to grind threw 10 modifications of the mirage lll / 5 and in the opposit having a tone of prem/event could have some draw backs...

The Israeli modifications and things like the Cheetah are what I was referring to, they’re upgrades that were made without any participation of France, and there usually are French prototypes that are equivalent to them. The Milan would be one of them, the Mirage 50 (both versions), Mirage IIIEX, Mirage III NG, Mirage IIIR2, all with unique modifications (engine, radar, etc) that would make them interesting but that would still fit more as premiums as they’re prototypes or were only exported.

There are already almost too many versions that saw service too, Mirage IIIC, IIIE, IIIR, IIIRD, 5F, all of the Mirage III family and that I’m not sure we’ll all see in the tech tree :D

You can put out of the list the B (no gun no radar) and R ( no radar, maybe no gun to, if I remember well)... I can't wait for a twin seatter version, because it's so beautyfull but saddly no gun for the mirage lll training version, maybe for the 5 ones?

All the planes I listed had cannons, including the IIIR, IIIRD and IIIR2, only their radar was removed, and they still had access to IR guided missiles and ground attack equipment. I didn't list the IIIB.

Yes I know, but saddly no radar at that br will hard to play don't you think? Sure you can still use Magic, but when you are out of AAMs the gun fight won't be to difficult without the help of radar? Also this mean no semi active homing system, no radar guided, and in night battle or heavy clouds you will be blind (almost)
