ALL MAC PLAYERS! Turn OFF (uncheck) the "Full Client" in Launcher.

A couple of Mac players found by turning OFF the Full Client mode the crash issue stops.

 

I advise all Mac users to turn OFF the Full Client mode until informed otherwise.

(that is if you have not hear about it already.)

 

  1. Open the loader.
  2. On right hand side, turn off the check mark called "Full client"

Make sure not to turn it back on by mistake, the game will constantly ask you to.

Can also confirm this works, however the constant popups and static message in game about not having the models, not to mention not being able to customize, makes this a hard compromise. It does work though, at least, so I hope Gaijin will still try to fix this ASAP and not just shrug it off as a suitable workaround. Thanks for the heads up!

They do, but I do not know what progress they made, and when it will be released.

I guess next patch.  :(

EDIT: On closer inspection it looks like I'm wrong, meddling with the files seems to disable all HQ textures though with the side effect that customization, armor viewer, protection analysis all work and it doesn't bother me all the time with the prompts to download textures so that's at least something.

I think I possibly narrowed the issue down a bit more. I've been experimenting a bit as I noticed that while it was crashing that it was almost never at the beginning of the match and also that it was almost impossible to play CAS without crashing immediately or very soon after spawning. So on a hunch I went ahead an re-enabled the full client but renamed the aircraft texture directory to keep the aircraft textures low quality.


Result: I played a whole bunch of games (10+) so far without any issues, and only airplane textures will be low quality. Customize view, armor viewer etc for tanks works fine and the game also won't bother you all the time to download the hq textures.
Also sure enough re-enabling hq aircaft textures causes crashes again every match not long after CAS starts spawning.

You can find the hq textures in "/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/War Thunder/content.hq/hq_tex/res" in the steam version.

If someone else wants to try here are the steps:
1. Start the launcher and enable the full client (if it isn't already)
2. Wait for the launcher to finish analyzing files
3. Rename hq_tex_aircrafts in above dir to something else
4. Play the game

Don't forget to rename the directory back to hq_tex_aircrafts before starting the launcher again next time and rename it again after file check otherwise the launcher will delete the renamed dir and download ~20GB of textures again.

One could for sure try to narrow it down to the specific airplane textures that cause the crash by adding/removing individual aircrafts textures but that would be a lot of effort and Gaijin devs should be able in theory to simply check which aircraft textures they updated in the recent patches. 
I do think it's more than one planes textures though as the crashes happen at all kinds of BRs for me.

Great investigation, that's certainly worked for me with the standalone version of War Thunder.

 

Right click on the War Thunder launcher app and the folder to rename can be found with this path:

/Applications/WarThunderLauncher.app/Contents/WarThunder.app/Contents/Resources/game/content.hq/hq_tex/res/hq_tex_aircrafts

I've put up a disclaimer, it doesn't look like my finding was accurate. looking closer at the tanks it looks like they're using the low quality textures (especially noticeable looking at the track wheels) so it might be the same as if "Full Client" was disabled as far as textures go, also no texture glitches in-game while I very much had many tank texture glitches with full-client and HQ textures.

What I don't quite understand is why they don't let us use the customization, armor viewer etc without the full client when it obviously works fine.

Thank you for finding this. I've been going nuts trying to figure this out. It didn't crash before they fixed the textures disappearing for jets when WEP was on - I wonder if there's some kind of texture bug / swapchain bug where they're not updating on the main thread (required for macos, or you'll crash) when they get the new textures - causing a crash, dropping the texture it just tried to download?

Until the issues with Full Client is fixed, do NOT use it.

GJ working on bugs now, but will take time to isolate and fix (it is possible a number of files need updating to work with Version 2.x)

Does this fix the non stop crashing issues? @Pony51..... they really need to fix this issue. Its making the game unplayable

This could explain why its crashing less for me on ground battles.... this crashing is getting unbearable and the missing/ janked textures is getting annoying too

Well this most recent update has been a load of "hot garbage" breaking the game even more which is not an easy thing to do at this point.

Now it freezes and crashes pretty much every match instead of just crashing which is even worse as it takes a lot longer and this is with full client disabled!
At least I had almost a week of rock stable play with full client disabled though this situation is getting ridiculous, maybe it's time to take a break.

I have been passing updates to Dev often, and that is all I can do.

I do not know when this will be fixed (and there is much work with 2.x).

We appreciate your help, Pony. It's just frustrating that this has been going on for weeks now and we all have lost lots of points in the game and money.

Go into graphics options in the launcher and turn all the settings down to Ultra Low Quality.  The game will not crash.  Gradually enable the graphics options after successfully completing games and see at which point it crashes.
