The LAV I

The LAV is a strong symbol in Canada's current Canadian Armed Forces, many people don't know that the vehicle history dates back to the middle of the cold war and that the LAV platform was based from the design of the Switzerland's Piranha I.

History:

In the 1970's Canada was looking for a wheeled armored vehicle, MOWAG saw this and wanted to license build their Piranha in Canada under the name LAV I. MOWAG settled on Diesel Division (Diesel Division of General Motors of Canada, Ltd.). In 1977 Canada placed an order for 491 vehicles. The propose of this vehicle was to serve as a training vehicle and as a armor support vehicle. Many LAV I's end up as reserve vehicles some of which even end up as RCMP/police armoured vehicles. Canada decided to retire their fleet of LAV I's in 2005 and has been sending them to other militaries or use domestically as stated above.

For those who don't know LAV stands for: Light Armoured Vehicle.

LAV I's have been deployed to many different countries and conflicts while serving under the Canadian Armed Forces. LAV's were also used by the UN in Bosnia.

This vehicle was also the platform USA decided to base their LAV 25 off of which is similar to the 2nd generation of Canadian LAV (LAV II Coyote)

Diesel Division of General Motors of Canada, Ltd. has since been purchased by General Dynamics Land Systems Canada that currently make the current generation of LAV's

If you're interested, CASR contained data and information on an AVGP Wolverine, a modification of the AVGP series to carry a Javelin S15 missile on a firing post. I don't have any data on how much ammunition it carried, though likely information on the vehicle and similar 2000s AVGP developments can be acquired via an ATI.

The 76mm is a really weak gun, 80mm RHA with HESH. However, GM Canada had at least marketed the option for a Cougar with 90mm Mk III. Unsure if this was ever constructed or trialed, but here's the datasheet.

The 90mm Mk 1 is an earlier iteration of the Mk III gun found in the AUBL/74 presently in game.

Now this comes as a surprise to me, but apparently the Cougar saw success against armour in Somalia, including a T-62. The L23A1 penetrates around 80-90mm (sources differ) of RHA, and as it fires a HESH round it flattens against the armour, defeating the effectiveness of angling. Assuming the higher 90mm figure offered by Janes Ammunition Handbook of 2002 is correct, the Cougar could feasibly front-penetrate foes such as the T-34, T-44, M4, Panther, Centurion, etc. That said, I doubt the post-penetration would be worth much. Given the small round, and ergonomic turret, I would assume a very short reload rate for the gun. Paired with the very high speed of the 6x6 Piranha platform, the Cougar could possibly be an effective 5.0-5.7 tank. Obviously, one would have to playtest it, because it doesn't possess many comparables. Looking back on my suggestion I really wonder what made me think adding photos of the turretless UN version was good. I'm really not sure.

Hey I mean all-white United Nations skins for tanks and other armour would be a total vibe in War Thunder. Now I can truly drive around, do nothing, and watch my team get plastered with the camo to match!
