INTRODUCTION:

At the beginning of researching of JH-7, the engineer team want to find a suitable platform, to test its fire control radar(232H)'s core function with the anti-ship missile system(Yingji-81), that time it's hard to find such aviation platform for testing, so they decided to enlist an old light bomber H-5 as their partner.

HISTORY:

This H-5 was called "Eagle" weapon system test bomber, discommissioned from the 3rd division of PLANAF in 1985, but kept its code 83130. The test work mainly focus on performance fit between 232H and Yingji-81 missile. And H-5"Eagle" completed the Yingji-81 missile launch verification before the first voyage of JH-7 in 1987.

DEVELOPMENT:

H-5 use different tail defensive turret from IL-28. Most think it's using the same one as H-6's but still use the HP-23 as main weapons. The H-5 later just load one front cannon on its norse. "Eagle" cancled the front bomb dropping observation, and replace it with the radar mask of JH-7, inside installed 232H pulse doppler radar.

I think it could load 2x YJ-81 and 3000kg bomb once.

+1, competitive Chinese CAS is always a need! Also, are the missiles fire & forget, or fire & observe?

Really I think allowing anti shipping missiles for ground rb would go a long way towards making high tier heavy bombers competitive again.
