M6 Linebacker

The M6 Linebacker is a M2A2 ODS Bradley with the TOW launcher removed and replaced with a 2x2 Stinger launch system. The linebacker was acquired to replace the need of a stinger team to have the leave their armoured vehicle to be able to fire on helicopters, low flying aircraft and UAVs.

Development of the M6 linebacker started in March 1995 when Boeing won the US Army Missile Command for the creation of a stinger missile launch system for the US Army’s Bradley IFV. The program for developing the M6 linebacker cost 20.1$ Million USD as of 1996 (unsure about how much it cost by the end of the program)
The M6 Linebacker uses the same system and hardware as the AN/TWQ-1 Avenger.

Boeing first delivered the Linebacker to the US Army in 1997 . The first 9 linebackers were delivered to the 1-44 Air Defense Artillery, Fort Hood Texas and were used in the US Task Force XXI Advanced Warfare Experiment in March of 1997. Where it was used to develop new tactics and procedures. Where it was observed the benefits of removing the need of a stinger team needing to leave the crew compartment to be able to fire their missiles. During the experiments it was called the BSFV-E (Bradley Stinger Fighting Vehicle-Enchanced)

Some of the enhancements that the M6 provided where:

  • Forward Area Air Defense (F AAD) Command, Control, and Intelligence (C²I) target display capability
  • Azimuth and elevation cues to the gunner
  • Slew-to-cue capability
  • Target acquisition-on-the-move and shoot-on-the-move capabilities.

The US Army ordered 99 M6 Linebackers that were used by the Third Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia.

In 2006 all of the M6 Linebackers were to be retired as SHORAD’s and had their stringer launch systems removed and were converted back to M2A2 ODS.

Pretty sure I +1'd it before : so back at it again

Would love to see it in game even if its not the most effective of AA.

Edit Nov 2022 : With the addition of the tracking to the M3A3 this must be available to that one too. I really hope we could see it added sooner than later.

You probably did it was tossed during the clean up and I waited until now because I wanted to see if anybody wanted to look through the list and make a new suggestion for it. Because there was over 2000 suggestions removed a few months back.

Reminder to anybody reading this that most of the things listed in this post:

can be remade as long as the suggestion is following our current rules

+1 for 9.0 or 9.3 as Type 93/Ozelot counterpart, it's slower than both and has no radar unlike Ozelot, but makes up for that with actual armor and a gun to defend itself, I think it should get M919 as well.

Most interesting part is that if this can fire on the move, why couldn't the normal Bradley as well? It's been bug reported, but I wonder if they'll actually do anything about it

Does the 25mm get any sort of special HE-VT shell? Would certainly be neat if it did, though I support this regardless! +1

From what I find its mainly used HE but its a Bradley M2A2 ODS so it might be possible it had the other rounds for the bushmaster but I could not confirm anything other rounds that were used by the linebacker except for the HE.

Makes sense. I'm not sure a proximity fuse shell even existed for the 25mm caliber.

No proxy, just:

-M919 APFSDS-T

-M791 APDS-T

-M910 TAPDS-T

-M792 HEI-T

-M793 TP-T

I think there was talks on producing a 25mm PAB (Programmable Airburst) or something but the military opted to switch to 30mm/50mm guns.

Too bad the M6 didn't get a specialized HE-VT round. Would have improved its capabilities immensely IMO.

The APFSDS-t is an argued point, it could have used it (as they both say operational service at the same time) but there are no reports of Linebacker's ever loading the round. Since they were never meant to see another tank.

I just posted it as the general ammo used by the M242.
